Quite a Jacket

By Pat H

from Kalispell, Montana

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • Compressible
  • Lightweight
  • lots of pocket space
  • Warm

Cons

  • Roomy
  • Zipper glides poorly

Best Uses

  • Damp seasons
  • Outer layer

Living in Montana I use this jacket around town in the winter and in the backcountry during the shoulder seasons when moisture can be more intrusive. I got the medium. I have this size in a number of OR jackets and found it to be the perfect size but this jacket is much roomier. I almost thought I got a mislabeled large because the arms were longer, the jacket was longer (more parka like but not quite) and the girth is bigger. As a matter of fact, I used the shack cord on the inside pockets to pull it in. I don't use as a midlayer. I think the havoc is better for that. I love the simplicity of the pattern and colors as it won't go out of style. The large internal pockes will hold a lot of stuff.

Best jacket yet

By Mr. Canoehead

from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

Pros

  • Great wind breaker
  • Light Weight
  • Warm

Cons

  • Design a bit plain

Best Uses

  • Extra under layer
  • Late season biking
  • Late Season Camping
  • Late season hiking

I found this jacket to be one of my favourite of OR. It's incredibly warm but also extremely light weight. It's a classic and there's no real fancy add-ons to the design - but I've worn this jacket on all my late season paddling trips so far this year and absolutely love how warm it is for the size.

Depends on how you want the jacket to fit. Size Medium should work for you as the Chaos can fit a little roomier than other jackets in our line.

Gore-Tex makes adhesive patch kits that will work best for repairing the Chaos Jacket. Most outdoor retail shops will carry this type of product.

I have the Mentor rain jacket, and I'm looking for a second -warm and windproof- layer. Would the Chaos work fine under the Mentor? If not, do you have a jacket made for this function?

The Chaos will fit underneath, but it might feel a little bulky. Other options, which are a thinner layers, are the Havoc Jacket, Transcendent Sweater and Neoplume Jacket.

    • A:

In my experience, the Chaos may be a bit bulky. I would recommend the Havoc or the Transcendent if you are willing to go with down.

Hi! How come the new updated jacket has less insulation than the 2009 version? Is it going to affect its warm-keeping performance? Thx.

    Old: PrimaLoft® ECO Sport insulation: 170 g torso, 133 g sleeves, 60 g hood
New: Primaloft Eco insulation 133g body, 100g sleeves, 60g hood

      A:

it will not be quite as warm as the previous version. Our first and current version shared the same insulation numbers, the middle version, from 2009 had a bit more insulation like you are noticing. We found that you do not really need that much in this specific piece and it also did not pack down as well. The fit was also affected a bit. We do make warmer belay style jackets, the Virtuoso or Maestro in down which you could consider if the Chaos is not warm enough.

  • Q:

Is this jacket supposed to fit big? I have 2 other OR jackets both med and tried on the Havoc in the med. but the medium Chaos I ordered feels more like a mislabled large to me in core and sleeve girth; and core and sleeve length.

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

No it most likely is correctly labled the Chaos design specs are listed as much bigger than for instance the Havoc. For example the chest cirumfrence on the Chaos in Medium is 51" vs 44" for the Havoc. One of the reasons for this is the Chaos is designed with under layers in mind.
