Outdoor Research bestsellers, The Arete Gloves™ are among the most versatile alpine gloves available, offering grip, dexterity and waterproof protection for extended backcountry adventures. Light, 100-weight fleece insulation keeps hands warm in intense conditions, and a silicone grip palm on the liners allows them to be worn independently from the shells on warmer days. Comments about M's Arete Gloves:

I have used these gloves for skiing, snowshoeing, winter camping and a few low-key, winter mountaineering trips.

They are durable, waterproof and fit well. They don't have a fantastic grip, but dexterity is OK. All around great glove.

      Comments about M's Arete Gloves:

Used regularly for winter mountaineering and ice climbing in the UK. Excellent fit and warmth to bulk ratio. Dry quickly enough when taken apart but not so good if left together.
Cuff adjuster broke quite early on but just carried on using.
Would buy again if I could find them in the shops

      Comments about M's Arete Gloves:

Just got my second pair of Arete gloves. Big improvement over the last ones; the removable liner is actually useful on its own and fits better. The only issue I had with the last pair was durability; they only lasted 1.5 winters (~150 days) before the seams stretched and tore. The new ones are great so far. I'm a wuss when it comes to my hands and I've had them out skiing and kiting at -25C with no problem.

        Comments about M's Arete Gloves:

I have had these gloves two years now and first tested them out on the slopes of Whistler, BC at night. I was impressed by their ability to sdtay on my hands despite extreme uses and its water proofing helped to keep hands dry.

The inner glove works well when working outside, but I would not be using the gloves if just standing around, mittens would be better.

I am going to the Arctic this winter and Northern Canada and will write an update review then.

I have been using OR's Fall Line Gauntlet Shell glove for many years and sadly they will soon require replacement. I have very warm hands and usually wear shells only, down to single digit temps. Besides the wear and small tears around the fingers, the shells are losing water repellancy. The Arete's description makes it sound like the Goretex is in the liner, not the shell. Is the Arete shell waterproof? Do you have something else that is more like the old Fall Line? I want a durable, lightweight waterproof shell and don't care too much about the liners. I have only worn the Fall Line's liners 2 or 3 times in the years I owned mine.

The liners are just 100 weight fleece; the shells are brilliantly waterproof and moderately warm by themselves.

        • Q:

I suppose the "idiot cords", listed as a feature, are those things hanging below the pictured gloves and are used to tether ski poles and the like. They are described as "removable." How can they be removed other than by carefully cutting them off below the stitching at the hem? Or is the stitch over the cords independent from the hem? As I am too old for downhill skiing it seems that they will just be a nuisance.

          • A:

Yep, the idiot cord is the long thing hanging below. You can put your hand and lower arm through them and tighten so you don't lose them when you take the glove off on the chair lift to pick your nose, as an example. Don't need to cut to take them off, it's just a very simple knot.

Is the Alpengrip palm suitable for rapelling?

Honestly no, if you had to do an emergency repel they would work but for extended repelling you will wear through the material.

I wear a small in my PL 150 gloves. On the size chart I am a medium. I want these to fit securely as I will need dexterity while wearing them. Small or medium?

            A:

Hello Mikey, since it wounds like you like a more snug fit and the PL 150 gloves in small fit well, I'd recommend trying the small Arete Gloves. It would be best if have the option of trying on these gloves. You can find an OR dealer in your area by clicking on the "Find a Dealer" tab at the bottom of any page under "Support". Thanks for your question!
