Great bit of kit for HA mountaineering

      By Matt the Brit

      Pros

      • Good UV protection

      Cons

      • Skirt Elastic Too Tight

      Best Uses

      • High altitude mountains

I recently returned from some exploratory mountaineering in Garwhal Himalaya where I protected myself from the intense UV rays with your Sun Runner Cap or SPF 50. An excellent bit of kit that did exactly what I bought it for however I have one comment/ suggestion regarding its design. The skirt (that was pretty much worn during daylight hours) may benefit from an adjustable cord at the back rather than the elastic strip. I confess I have a larger than average head but when the elastic was fully extended it still felt tight and often gave me a headache. Not ideal at altitude!

It is the best beach running or walking hat ever with the neck cape being able to be worn several ways, or not at all. It is easy to install or de-install the cape and this hat looks very cool in a funtional way. So many people want to know where I got it. It is, also my favorie golf hat, with and without using the neck protecting sun cape.

Can't say enough about this hat. I am ordering another .

This gives excellent sun protection for head and neck that you can't get with even with wide-brim hats (especially the nape). If the extra detachable cover is wrapped around the face even the cheeks are protected. It turns into a nice and stylish looking cap without the drape.

I bought this hat to replace the Nike Runner hat I'd washed and accidentally shrunk in the clothes drier. I wear the Sun Runner hat for trail runs, half-marathan training, backpacking, and spring backcountry ski touring. I've realized I only need one hat with all the features this cap comes with.

            Comments about Sun Runner Cap!":

I have owned two of these hats. After the first one wore down, I immediately bought another.

The hat is cool in the summer and surprising warm in the winter down to about 25F. If I am outside, I wear the hat. I use it for running, climbing, skiing, hiking...you name it.

The hat is extremely light and folds up nicely, which is a plus if you are climbing.

I travel extensively and found that it makes the perfect traveling companion on flights, because I can fold it up and put it in my carry-on or even back pocket.

The only problem I have had with the hat is durability. Both of the hats separated where the bill meets the hat. Although, I think the damage is more a function of me folding the bill into the hat when storing it.

I wear this hat when I'm running. I'm bald/shaven and this hat is very comfortable. I'd not worn hats before and always had to take my shirt off to wipe sweat from my eyes. This cap prevents sweat from rolling in my eyes and in colder weather helps keep my head insulated. I throw it in the laundry with my running gear in normal wash cycles and it does great.

This hat is great for preventing the sunburn which sneaks up on you when in the snow or on glaciers. It also shields yor eyes from snow glare, making sunglasses that much more effective in bright conditions. It is not hot, so works well in warm conditions. Packs up well and washes easily.

Another piece of OR gear I tried for the first time this summer when climbing Mt Rainier. For someone who can't hike in most hats because his head gets way too warm this is perfect. Carrying 75+ lbs up from Paradise to Camp Muir this hat (and attachable neck covering) kept me cool and the same pasty white complexion I prefer. In the higher altitudes it fit perfectly under my helmet giving me sun protection while remaining breathable.

When sun reflecting off snow is not a concern remove the neck covering and you have a very breathable hat good for all sorts of activities from walking around town to hiking Mailbox Peak. This hat is part of my essentials kit every time I head out to the mountains.

The bill is shorter than on regular baseball caps. However, this can be overcome simply by using sunscreen on exposed parts of the face, esp. your nose. The great thing about this hat is its lightness. Even tho it covers your entire head and neck except for the front of your face, it's so light and cool it wears better on a hot day than anything else I've tried.

The sunrunner cap has an external cinch-strap for adjustability. The large will most likely fit snugly, but if you would like more room, the XL cinched will be comfortable. Thanks for your question Mark!
