Great hat and amazingly light

By Encinoman

from Encino, CA

Pros

  • Big brim
  • Comfortable chin strap
  • Fits my Big Head
  • Removable rain cover
  • Well Ventilated

Cons

  • Wind blew off rain cover

Best Uses

  • Hiking

I hike in Santa Monica Mountains and needed a hat to protect me from the rain and sun and this hat fits the bill. It is extremely light (I hardly know that it is on my head) and fits my big head really well. The chin strap is also very comfortable. My only complaint is that a strong wind gust blew up under the brim and blew off the rain cover. Luckily I was able to recover it. It turns out that the rain cover is held on with an elastic band that is not strong enough to combat a strong wind gust. OR should have included velcro fasteners to secure it. I plan on adding these fasteners myself. I am hoping that OR will include velcro fasteners in the next generation of this hat.

  • Q:

Are the mesh sides UPF 30 or do I need to keep the cover on for sun protection?

The hat itself will offer UPF 30 without the cover. Thanks!

  • Q:

    Hi

Looking for a sunhat with good sun protection. Read that this hat has UPF 30 and that is good. However how is it with the ventilation mesh? How good will the sun protection be at the mesh panels?
    Asked on 5/5/2012 by Patrick

      A:

The side mesh vents do not provide significant protection from the sun and do not carry a UPF rating.

  • Q:

Is there a lining in this hat? If so, what is it made of? I am looking for summer rain hat. I have an OR with a lining - a misto sombrero. I like it, but also want something lighter.

      A:

This hat does not have a lining. It just has a TransAction headband, which is a highly wicking material for hot environments.

  • Q:

YOu just answered a questio I had and said the rain cover is green or black. I guess I was looking for more info. Is it soft? hard? does it fold or bunch up so it fits in my pack? does it conform to the shape of the hat? Do you have a pictiure of what the hat looks like with the rain cover on it? I can't find it in Chicago, but I am interested in this hat.
Asked on 2/24/2012 by Dan from Chicago, IL

      A:

The cover is a soft, waterproof material that can be stuffed into any pack. It does conform to the shape of the hat. If you take a look at the product on some of our online vendor's websites, there are photos with the rain cover. For example, take a look at the product on backcountry.com.

  • Q:

Can the sunshine sombrero hat be folded and put in a pocket or backpack without damage to it?
    Asked on 8/11/2011 by John

    1 answer

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

Yes, while this hat has a foam stiffened brim, it is still soft enough to be folded or rolled to fit into a pocket. It also has a seam halfway, making it easier to fold in half for packing and storage.

  • Q:

I do a lot of standup paddleboarding at the beach. I need a hat that provides shade from the sun, but the hat will always be wet so i need a hat where the brim does not collapse. Need to see the waves coming without always having to adjust the brim/hat all the time. What hat do you recommend? Thanks.

      A:

All of our sombreros have a stong, foam stiffened brim that should hold up well, even when wet. Our Seattle Sombrero has received high ratings and is always a top seller as well. That may be the hat that fits your needs of good sun protection, highly water resistant with a stiff brim that you won't have to continually adjust. If you have other questions, let us know.

    • A:

I've worn the Helios which has a similar feeling brim in a torrential downpour in Nicaragua and while not waterproof, the brim held. One note is that this brim is not uniform around and is longer in the back. The Seattle Sombrero is bomb-proof Goretex but it gets warm. If you don't care about looks, try one of those caps with a cape. Stay away from the cotton boonie hats as I've worn one while surfing and it went bleh. My only concern would be if the salt build up would make it droop over time. Or try the sunbroilet which is stiffer due to some piping.

  • Q:

Is this hat washable in machine or should it be hand washed? What is it made of?
Asked on 8/9/2011 by J.L. from San Antonio, TX

    1 answer

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

Yes, this hat is machine washable. We recommend washing the hat itself on cold and hanging up to dry. The rain shield cover can also be washed and putting it in the dryer for up to 15 minutes will help re-set the water-proofness. The rain cover is made of Pertex Shield ripstop fabric and the hat is made of 100% nylon supplex fabric.

  • Q:

The color is stated as Olive/Khaki, however, it does not appear to look olive except perhaps olive drab-ish, on a far stretch. Is the color in the picture correct? Is the color 'swatch' correct? (The swatch shows it as green/grayish) I don't see green in the picture...
As the others have asked, can you please post better pictures/details of the rain cover and pocket?
    Thanks!

      A:

Thank you for your question. The Ventia rain cover for this hat is Olive and that is why this color swatch shows both colors.

  • Q:

How exactly does the rain cover attach for rain protection? A picture is worth a thousand words, will you post additional photos of the hat with the rain cover attached?
