Great suspenders

By phill the fish

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • No Hard Buckles Or Clips
  • Use With Multiple Pants
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Needs User Modification

Best Uses

I like the design of these suspenders compared to other products that I've used previously because there are no hard buckles, clips are other fittings to dig into you or cause hot spots. As these suspenders are a Y shape they do not slip off your shoulders. There is also a short elasticated section in the back to prevent the usual wedgie when bending down !

I read the previous positive and negative reviews before I decided to look at these suspenders in the store. When I saw them I realized they could be easily modified to avoid the problems the negative reviewers experienced. Note that this does not mean the product design is flawed, these are one-size-fits-all suspenders so as with anything like that expect to have to fiddle a bit the first time to get them working perfectly for you.

The questions I wanted to answer in the store before I purchased were:

    1) Will they fit me ?
The OR webpage has a link to their size guide, unfortunately it gives no information applicable to these suspenders. I am 6' tall, when I adjusted the suspenders for my height there was about 4 inches of velcro exposed on the front. The way they adjust means that if you are taller there will be more velcro exposed, if you are shorter then less. I estimate these suspenders will work for people between 5'5" and 6'4".

    2) Does the exposed velcro snag on other materials ?
YES. In the store I did find that the exposed velcro snagged base layers such as the OR Sequence Crew

    3) Can the suspenders be easily modified to prevent snagging ?
YES. The velcro is stitched to the webbing so once I udjusted the suspenders to the correct length for my torso I just removed the excess velcro that was left exposed (i.e. unstitched it, cut to desired length, singed edge with soldering iron to prevent fraying and hand stitched the edge of the velcro to the webbing). It took me about 20 minutes in total to complete this modification.

I interchange these suspenders between Alibi and Cirque pants. I have also added loops to the waistband of other brands of technical pants so I can use these suspenders with them also.

This is a very versatile product.

    Fine suspenders.

        Comments about Suspenders:

These work perfectly for me. I am 6' 2" and use them with my OR Furio pants for skiing. There is quite a bit of exposed velcro, but the snagging described by another reviewer hasn't occurred with any of the layers I've worn together with these suspenders (merino base layers, fleece, cotton, outer jacket, etc.). I even tried various fabrics from my closet to see if they would snag and they didn't.

Perhaps they are a tad pricey for what they are, but to me these are fine suspenders. Ideal for when you want outer layer pants to have a slightly loose fit for use with various base layers.

Exposed Velcro on suspenders snags shirt

        By AlpenPaul

        from Kirkland, WA

        Verified Reviewer

        Pros

        • Don't slip over shoulder
        • Tough

        Cons

        • Snags shirt

        Best Uses

        • With Tremor pants

        Comments about Suspenders:

I use the suspenders with Tremor pants, and really liked them at first. Then I realized that the inside forearms of my shirts were getting snagged by the exposed velcro on the suspenders. I am 5'11" and have 7 inches of extra "exposed" velcro in front. This is the section that snags my shirt.
The velcro is really tough and works great as velcro. However, the exposed loop side is also tough. IF I had two 7" sections of the matching material to put over the exposed section it would be perfect. This velcro is not quite the same as the normal "hook and loop" that you get at a fabric store.

        Comments about Suspenders:

I generally dislike belts on ski pants and bought these to use with the Tremor pant. Granted I'm not terribly tall, only 5'-8", but I would have to be at least 6' tall to not have an enormous amount of excess material. I was able to make them work but it seems fairly ridiculous that I had to do anything.
