I use this product for overnight / multinight tramping, hunting and back country fly fishing trips in New Zealand. Alpine Bivy Bag suits temperatures up to 20 C, no moisture inside bag, unlike cheaper bags. Also extremely weather proof.Mat strap great inside bag. Packs up nice and small. My only advise is BEFORE going the Bivy Bag option check if you can actually sleep with a bag right above your face, several friends have sold their Bivy Bags as they are claustraphopic.

          Comments about Alpine Bivy:

Great allround bivy. I usally use it on hiking trips with a tarp. Waterproof. I`ve never had any problems with condensation. The only downside for this bivy is to keep the mesh opening open all night.

          Comments about Alpine Bivy:

I'm 185cm and the bug netting presses against my forehead a little which means I can have some bug bites through the netting.

This is the second Bivy I have owned, and the width and construction of the Alpine is excellent. After 3 years of regular use in the wilderness, this bag shows no sign of giving up. Packing down to a 1L weight it's marvelously small.

Two design additions I'd like to see:
          * have a clip so the hood can stay up all night. I've added my own.
          * ventilation at the toe end to eliminate condensation.

This bivy is great.. I picked it up a year ago and it has gone everywhere with me from camping on top of Mt. Rainier to the Columbia River Bar (Both in WA, USA) it has been an excellent addition to my gear collection. Bivy survived +50 mph winds one night on whiskey dick ridge above Ellensburg WA. I'm impressed and keep it up OR.

            Comments about Alpine Bivy:

This is a great bag that I carry on all my missions, and personal trips. It is light weight, and fits in a 1L bag when rolled up. It is totally waterproof, and when the rain cover is rolled up, the single poll still keeps the bug netting your face, which is a godsend for the slightly claustrophobic. By adding loops for it to be staked out OR has made sure that as you move in the night the bag stays right side up, and does not shift on the ground.

            Comments about Alpine Bivy:

This is the shelter you want to take on fast and light mountaineering trips, traverses or multi day backpack adventures into the high country. This shelter has contributed to the success of several summit attempts in the Cascades and the Olympics. The Alpine Bivy, combined with a basic tarp is unrivalled for lightweight protection from nasty alpine elements and refuge from bugs. It is probably one of the fastest shelter systems to deploy in adverse conditions.

Love the bivy. Excellent quality, very comfortable.
It is easy to set and gives good head space.
The mesh comes in the face, that could be improved, and maybe a hip hight zipper.

            This bivy is dependable gear.

              Comments about Alpine Bivy:

I have been using my OR Alpine bivy for a couple of years now and I have to say it is the finest bivy on the market. I have used it in all kinds of conditions and it has never let me down. Speaking of down I have a down sleeping bag so condensation is a major issue with me. The only time I have had any condensation was below freezing and it collected around the foot area only. It works great when camping in below freezing weather in a tent as well. I sleep in it with the top wide open so that when I exhale and my breath freezes and falls back on the bag it lands on the bivy keeping my bag dry.

Is there a rough estimate for the how much this bivy ads to a sleeping bag's temperature rating?
Asked on 12/14/2012 by Dan from Rochester, NY

                1 answer

                • A:

Short answer: maybe 5 to 10 degrees. There are a lot of factors that can affect your bag's temp rating. It depends a lot on how cold you sleep, what pad you use, what you wear inside the bag, if it's windy, etc. To give you an example, I recently used my alpine bivy with a newish 20 degree down bag inside a tent and the temps got down to 10-15 degrees overnight. I tend to sleep pretty cold, but with two pairs of long undies, a light jacket and the Prolight 4 sleeping pad and I slept like a baby.

Keep the bivy staked out and taught as possible and if the terrain allows use a guy line to keep the bivy off of you. There is a guy line loop on the top of the bivy.
