Great for cool or wet conditions

By Steph / Conservation K-9s

from Eatonville, WA

Pros

  • Adjustable cuffs
  • Durable
  • Hood Can Fit A Helmet
  • Style Name
  • Taped seams

Cons

  • Not Room For Many Layers

Best Uses

  • Hiking in the rain
  • Walking around town

I got this jacket towards the tail end of training for fieldwork with Conservation K-9s. For training south of Seattle, this jacket kept me dry and the winds out. Now that we're up in northeastern Alberta, I primarily use it to keep me warm on the walk to the cafeteria. I can fit a sweatshirt underneath it and stay warm for the short commute. Since temperatures are below zero F here, I haven't tried wearing it with layers for a full day in the field, but I don't think there's enough room to fit adequate layers. I'm glad there's a thin fleece layer inside - which some softshells don't have. I'm looking forward to wearing this more when I'm back out of winter. As a side note, my blackberry Mithril performed beautifully when I wore it to "The Hobbit"!

Comments about W's Mithril Jacket!":

Its the perfect jacket to have on as an outer shell when I'm going up and down the snow covered dunes on the edge of Lake Michigan. I also keep it in my kit to throw on in camp after a day of paddling. My only issue is that it really seems to run small. I think next time I'd consider buying a men's small rather than a women's medium.

Definitely worth the price!

Comments about W's Mithril Jacket!":

I put off purchasing this jacket for a year due to the price. I wish I hadn't waited so long! This is my everywhere jacket! The cut is fashionable and the construction is impeccable! I love that the hood is large enough to cover my head - even when in a pony tail! It washes easily and dries quickly! The length is perfect - goes beyond my waist for more coverage. Wish you made it in more color options - like red! You won't be disappointed in this jacket! Great for all layers we wear snowshoeing and skiing!!!

Winter Wonder

By T-Dawg

from Morgantown, WV

Pros

  • Sheds water
  • Warm but not bulky
  • Windproof

Cons

  • Needs more pockets
  • Zipper should be offset

Best Uses

  • Skiing
  • Winter cycling

Comments about W's Mithril Jacket!":

I bought this to use as a ski/snowboard jacket, but found another one that was cuter and allowed room for more layers. (Fashion is important too, you know.)I use it to bike commute to work. It's excellent at stopping wind and shedding light rain or heavy snow. The fleece lining gives me the extra warmth I need in winter without making me sweat bullets once my core warms up after a few minutes of activity. The hood is also big enough to fit my helmet under. Suggestions for improvement would be more pockets, an offset zipper to avoid chin scratchage (I know that's not really a word), and a little more room. I'm a small gal (5'2" and slim) and the medium won't allow for more than one layer underneath. That being said, I subject this jacket to daily abuse, and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

    • Q:

I bought one of these a few years ago and have enjoyed using it. However, after such frequent use, I would now like to add more waterproofing to it. Can I use a wash in waterproofing (e.g. NikWax - T.X. Direct), or do I have to use a spray on?
      Any other suggestions?
      Thanks!

      Q:

hi! I snowboard, hike, ice climb, and am always outside when i get the chance. I can not tell by the picture or other reviews just how much insulation is in the jacket, I am looking for something that will keep me warm with layers, but that i could wear alone on a mildly cold day, also something water proof enough I can ice climb/play in snow in and not get soaked through. I am fit, broad shouldered, and a normal medium, are the sizes true?

I think the jacket runs small. I've been happy wearing it with two underlayers and a fleece in 20 degree weather--hiking hard. I've also just thrown it over a sweater and gone out to run errands in it in upper 20s. I really like it and think it would work for what you are looking for. Its very tough.
Contemplate a size up. Or if you are female--maybe go to the guys version.
