Lightweight Greatness

Pros

  • Easy set-up
  • Lightweight
  • no bugs

Cons

  • Akward Ridgepole
  • Hard To Enter And Exit

Best Uses

  • Backcountry
  • Extended backpacking
  • Minimalist
  • Spring And Summer Camp

I use my Bug Bivy 4-5 days a week, working on a trail crew. Both for work and pleasure this bivy hasn't let me down. You will barley notice it in your pack. Its great to keep the creepy crawlers out and to throw in your daypack when headed into mosquito country, to have lunch in. This along with a tarp is the ultimate lightweight setup for spring and summer camping. The only trouble i've encountered is getting in and out of with ease, for those mid-night nature calls it can be difficult to shimmy out of, but what bivy is. Overall, this is ideal for simple, minimal camping weather it's backcountry, frontcountry, or beach camping.

    Comments about Bug Bivy:

I may have had one of the first made.
I use my Outdoor Research Bug Bivy often.
I have never worn out an Outdoor Research Bug Bivy. I have had three, over the past many years, only because two were stolen.
I use it backpacking and horse packing.
I often use it for sleeping cowboy-style: no tarp, no tent.
On well-drained ground, I flop over and the bottom has kept the rain off and all my gear was inside and dry.
    Sturdy, easily wiped clean.
    Looks like brand new.

will this protect against bed bugs?
Asked on 10/26/2012 by rob J from NY, NY

      • A:

I think it would provide at least limited protection from bed bugs. The best mattress encasements have added protection around the zipper ends; you may be able to improvise something extra with duct tape. Bed bugs should be unable to penetrate the bottom liner or true noseeum mesh. However, they can bite through the mesh if it touches the skin. A mummy bag liner might help. It's worth a try if you plan to stay in hostels or hotels, which, worldwide, are not doing a great job at controlling bedbugs. I've found few other products on the market that are as likely to give at least limited protection.

      Q:

DO YOU RECOMMEND COATING THE BUG BIVY WITH A PERMETHRIN COATING OR AN INSECT REPELLENT? I AM GOING TO AFRICA
Asked on 8/16/2011 by j from denver

      1 answer

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

The Bug Bivy has a very fine mesh that prevents bugs as little as no-see-ums from getting in to your shelter. The bivy should not require any additional bug repellent to keep bugs out. If you would like additional protection, an insect repellent can be applied.

    • Bug Bivy

      Q:

I have found, after years of using many differnt pads, that I actually love the thermorest Neo-Air Large Pad - size 25 inches wide by 72 inches long. The extra effort to blow it up is worth it based on the comfort it provides. My question is, will it fit in the bug bivy? My concern is that the pad will be destructive to the netting in the foot area? I'm 6 ft at 200 lbs. My primary form of backpacking is light weight medium to long distance.
      Asked on 7/31/2011 by Anonymous

      1 answer

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

Thank you for your questions. The full length of this bivy is 89", which should allow for plenty of space to fit your Neo-Air thermorest pad without having it directly against the netting at the foot area. You should be able to use your current pad without worry of hurting the netting in any way.

      Q:

I am 6'2" and weigh 220. Will I fit in the Bug Bivy? I've read some reviews that it may be too small.
      Thanks!
      Asked on 7/26/2011 by Anonymous

      1 answer

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

The entire length of the Bug Bivy is 7'5" so you should fit inside just fine. The overall fit will also depend on what type of pad you are using. If you have any other questions, let us know.
