Like Crocs with even thicker skin, these gaiters are made to function on extended mountaineering trips, in cold weather and difficult conditions. They are larger in circumference, providing more room for plastic boots and insulated pants. The inside leg of each gaiter is made of durable Cordura® fabric that resists crampon snagging.

      Comments about Expedition Crocodiles:

These crocs have thicker skin than the animal they are named after! A pair of gaiters usually lasts me a year due to crampons, snowshoes and skis but after one year of abuse there is only one small hole. They are perfect for mountaineering and cold weather sports but are too heavy and warm for snow-free hikes in the woods (That is where the Verglas come in).

I've used these in rain, snow, crumbling rocks and through spiky bushes. They are amazing! For warmer weather they're a bit warm so stick to something less burly for summer. When sizing, take into account if you'll be wearing thicker layers. The front vertical closure is velcro, which is super easy with gloved hands.

Great for all types of hunting trips from the mud, the snow, and crossing running water. The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 was that I have had to repair the stiching for the upper buckle on both gaiters. Now that I have perfected them, I will never use any other brand. I also use the gaiters for X-county skiing. Nice and Warm!

          Comments about Expedition Crocodiles:

I live in a cooler climate and use these Croc's year round. Hike and backpack with shorts and gaiters in summer, and snowshoe, x-country ski, and hike with them in winter. They would probably be a bit too heavy duty for summer use in hotter climates.
They are super durable, easy to clean, adjustable, and velcro really holds. Old model had less adjustment range on top, which became an issue when I lost weight in my calves. I still needed the bottom of the gaiter size for my boots, but on top these old gaiters ended up pinching the material, which then pinched my skin. No problem here with these new Croc's.
I returned the old model gaiters because the thread holding the velcro in place was not heavy duty enough and kept ripping. Dealer replaced them with these new Croc's. I don't expect any more problems because the thread is much heavier duty now.

These Crocs Rock! I have many different pairs but I go to these more than any other pair. A little extra weight is no sacrafice when accompanied by the durability and waterproof features. The top is a little wide when not wearing many layers, say with shorts but no big deal. I recommend putting webbing or duct tape around the boot strap to prolong its life span.

I have used these gators for years. They are heavy duty and very durable. The sole boot strap still in good condition after years of heavy use. Easy on and off with Velcro front. Durable Cordura material, very waterproof. Only slight improvement suggested is Left and Right should be better marked for fast easy identification and low light situations. Many years of Search and Rescue operations, field trips, and snow shoeing and I am as pleased as the day i bought them.

          Comments about Expedition Crocodiles:

My Expedition Crocodiles were overkill for my first Ranier climb, but they just jeep going no matter how badly I treat them. While my climbing partners have gone through two sets of gaiters, my set just keeps working. Set them up to fit your boots in the comfort of your home and then use the Velcro front to get them on and off.

While they were more than I needed for my first trip, they have proven to be strong enough to survive more than a dozen trips up and down various mountains. Overkill? Certainly. Think long-term companion here and you won't be disappointed.

A size 10 boot would fit into our Large or XL gaiters. The Expedition Crocs are great for plastic mountaineer boots, since the circumference around the bottom is made larger for plastic boots.

              A:

You should still be a medium in the Expedition Crocs. They are designed to be larger, to fit over a hard plastic boot. As the medium was too small in the 61570, the same size should be just right in 61540.

With the Expedition Crocs, I would recommend following the sizing chart with a size XL. These crocs are designed with more room in mind to fit plastic boots and insulated pants. Since you are not using plastic boots, I might recommend the regular Crocodiles (http://www.outdoorresearch.com/site/m_s_crocodiles.html) that will fit slightly more snugly but still provide the protection you need.

Since you wear a size 10, I would recommend the Large. It fits men's shoe sizes 8-11, and will fit better than the XL (sizes 10-13) with light to medium weight hiking boots. You can see a sizing guide on the webpage by clicking on the Sizing and Fit tab near the description. Thanks for your question!

Thank you for your questions. The Expedition Crocodile and Men's and Women's Crocodiles are made for extended hiking and mountaineering trips. They should fit around most plastic mountaineering boots if the correct size is used. That said, depending on the size of your ski boot they should fit. In answer to your second question, the Women's Crocodile is the Women's version of the Men's Crocodile which is a slightly "less beefy" version of the Expedition Crocodiles. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you.
