Comments about Outdoor Research Bugout Gaiters:

As a field researcher in a deer tick infested area it is important to keep them off because of the threat of Lyme Disease. Before the gaiters, high concentrations of deet insect repellent were applied to cuffs and socks and now this can be eliminated. The tops do slouch a little due to the snakeproof chaps worn over them and I may have gotten one size too large.

Comments about Outdoor Research Bugout Gaiters:

Outdoor Research has fixed the problems with prior gaiters. These work!
    - Before, the snaps, while spiffy, can break.
    - No more strings to break - the buckles are much sturdier.

Nicely done! We always wear gaiters while hiking - they keep the bugs from crawling up our legs, keep rocks out of our shoes and we can store our convertible pant legs in them for hotter days.

    • Q:

      Hi,
I am petite woman and my shoe size 5.5 (US women size). Would small bugout graiters provide me enough protection? Or should I go for kids sizes?

I assume this is THE product in your portfolio to prevent ticks. Can you please confirm or let me know if alternatives exist?
      Thanks.

    • Q:

I was reading the previous questions and there was talk about the "top" sizing for the gaitors. I would like to know if that size that was given was for the streching capability of the gaitor or relaxed opening.

        A:

In a previous answer, the top edge was given stretched. The size large is 18 1/8" stretched. The medium will be about 1" smaller and the XL will be about 1" longer.

    • Q:

Why does your product information say "Do not re-treat with other Permethin insect repellent product." I would think that would be quite logical after "70 launderings."
They fit great...anxious to give them a try.

    • Outdoor Research Bugout Gaiters

      Q:

I'm really excited to receive my recently purchased gaiters. I work outdoors in the SC lowcountry - think disneyland for chiggers, mosquitos, and ticks. These should really help.

When fitted properly, how high up the calf should the top elastic band be situated to prevent bagging/bunching/slipping etc? I wear a men's 9.5 and fell in a grey area between medium and large on the sizing chart. I went with large because they were over an inch taller (my logic was for higher grasses, etc). However, I'm 5'8" so I dont have super-long legs. Should I have gone medium?

      Thanks!

        A:

To avoid having the gaiters be too tight, going to the higher size was probably best. You can also measure around your leg about where the gaiter will land on your leg. Stretched, the Top edge on the size L is 18 1/8". The M is about 1" smaller.

Thank you for your questions. The height of this gaiter depends on its size. The heights are as follows, S - 9", M - 9 1/4", L - 10 3/4", XL - 11".

      Q:

I read a review elsewhere that said these slouch down and "bag" around the ankles. Is this a soft fabric or will they stay up on their own?

        A:

The BugOut Gaiters are made of uncoated nylon. While they are not stiff, they are made of a durable material. They are not soft as with a softshell material. There is a sizing chart online, and the sizes relate to your Men's shoesize, so be sure to get the correct size. The top of the gaitor has elastic material that fits tightly around the leg. If they are slipping, it is most likely because the size is slightly too large.

      Q:

I'm interested in BugOut Gaiters to prevent tick bites. I've never used gaiters. Will they work with athletic/running shoes, or must you use them with boots? How high on the leg do they come up?

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

Hello Alma, thanks for your question. The BugOut Gaiters are designed to work with hiking boots, but should still work with running /tennis shoes. The elastic at the top and bottom of the gaitor enable it to fit around smaller/larger boots and legs. It will come up above the ankle or just up your calf depending on the leg.
