Details

No matter if it's a drizzle or a steady downpour, these waterproof gaiters will keep feet and footwear dry on a rainy approach: The boot section is molded to conform to the shape of your footwear and reaches nearly to the toe; The sidewalls extend down the edges of boots so even in soggy bushwhacking, your feet will stay dry from the elements; And while not intended for snow, these gaiters provide superior protection in rainy conditions.

Salamander Gaiter review

By Dave

from Toronto

Comments about Outdoor Research Salamander Gaiters:

My only peeve and its a small one is the ankle buckle and strap are a little on the small side. I wore these gaiters with my Sportiva Trango Treks (non GTX) and my Saloman Quest 4 GTX and found that the ankle buckle and strap just barely fit but it did fit. Mind you, I would not want copious amounts of fabric flopping around either. I also found the lace hook came undone quite often, but the gaiter was still effective and did its job due to the semi rigid nature of the front of the gaiter.

Put these to the real test on a 7 day Algonquin interior canoe trip in early May 2010. 12 portages and lots of rain, the gaiter without a doubt helped out. Not to mention protecting the material of the boot.

  • Outdoor Research Salamander Gaiters

    Q:

    1. How well do these gaiters keep out foxtails?

    2. Will foxtails get embedded in the hook-n-loop seam on the front? (Having a rear seam would reduce this likelihood.)

    3. I wear a size 9 (euro 42) Sportiva hiking boot and I'd like to have the laces completely covered by the gaiter (as foxtails readily accumulate there, and in the tongue of the boot); what size would you recommend (since both M or L will work)?

      A:

The Salamander Gaiter with the longer, top-of-boot rain protection, should provide enough coverage to keep out most debris. Since you fall into both size ranges for a S/M and L/XL gaiter, the L/XL will give you more coverage on the front of the boot. The other factor to look at will be the top cuff of the gaiter which you will need to balance according to the size of your calf. If you have a small calf then the S/M gaiter might work better for you. If you have bigger calves the L/XL should work just fine.

Hello Rick, thanks for your question. With a size 12 boot, the L/XL Salamander gaiter will fit well.

    Q:

Are you going to make a high version of the Salamander gaiter? If these gaiters were higher they would be perfect for backpacking with a poncho, preventing wet calves.
