This hat is my go-to when heading up peaks--it breathes nicely and prevents overheating on the way up, but the windblocking/water resistance paired with fleece ear cover keeps me nice and warm high up or in bad weather. Paired with a thin balaclava and/or face mask, and you got an unstoppable piece for tackling blustering conditions. It's served me well on some particularly cold/windy/wet runs, although it's definitely reserved for the coldest conditions for high-exertion.
That perfect balance of warmth/breathing comes at the price of crystal clear hearing: when wearing this hat, I definitely noticed my surroundings sounding a little muted, almost like I was wearing earbuds; maybe some holes drilled in the fleece/a vent in the shell would remedy that problem. So, if you're doing communication-intense sports, enjoy listening to the gentle noises in the woods, there might be some options that will ring truer. Definitely a good piece to have on the ol' hat rack.

I love this hat if it only fit my LARGE head. It seems OR's XL is never quite an XL. I had to modify their gorilla hat many years ago to fit my large noggin, but I thought the sizing would have gotten better over time, but it still runs small. Sizing chart says 24 inches, but that would be really tight on a 24 inch head (like mine), enough to give a headache.I love the outer fabric that sheds snow and the fleece around the ears. Just wish it fit

As a LEO who works in the Pacific NW, I needed a Beanie I could wear on operations that transition from the outdoors to indoors. That is, a Beanie that keeps the head warm while outside but doesn't overheat as soon as you transition to indoor environments. This Beanie works perfect and the sunglass sleeves are a excellent addition.
