Cons

  • Non-taped Seams

Sold my other bigger-brand hooded soft shell jacket and got this one instead because I didn't want to look like every other high-school/college kid hanging out at a coffee shop. Napoleon chest pocket has a lot of room for my smart phone and has a rear earphone hole. The other 2 front pockets are also spacious. When the jacket is zipped all the way up, the zipper does not rub and irritate my chin because it's tucked in and has a fleece-lined draft flap. Seams are not taped, though, so it's not totally waterproof. It's got a regular fit which makes it easy to wear with a long-sleeved shirt without the sleeves binding up and also provides enough space for layers should the temps go down.

This jacket fits great!! I am 5' 10'' and 175 lbs. I bought a large. Its roomy enough for a light fleece underneath and still slim enough fit to wear alone. Roomy armpit that doesn't restrict or bind. The hood is not helmet compatible but thats what I wanted! Good water/wind resistance. Great value from a brand that holds up!! A tee shirt, long sleeve fleece, this jacket and a thin waterproof shell and Im set for a day on the slopes in almost any conditions.

The Transfer could be used on those drier days but it will not hold up during a considerable snow storm or adverse rain/sleet conditions.

    • Q:

I've just been certified as a scuba diver and would like to add my cert patch to the shoulder of this jacket. Any suggestions on how to go about this and preserve the integrity of the jacket as much as possible?

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

In general, you do not want to stitch water resistance/waterproof materials as this reduces the waterproofing ability of the fabric. If the patch is applied with heat, it could be a safer option for a jacket such as this.

        A:

The Transfer is made with a highly water-resistant/breathable bonded soft shell fabric: nylon face and brushed fleece interior.

      Does it have pit zips?

      • A:

        I just purchased this jacket.

It does not have pit zips. It doesn't seem like it would need unless you're really pumping it and there is no wind.

    • Q:

As a "soft shell," is this jacket comparable to Polartec's Windbloc fabric (both wind resistant and still stretchy) or is this more like a nylon jacket outside with fleece inside? Does "breathable bonded soft shell fabric" have 2 way or 4 way stretch to it?

      Thanks!
Asked on 3/9/2012 by Digger from Colorado

      1 answer

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

The Transfer is a bonded soft shell fabric with a nylon face and brushed fleece interior. It is highly water resistant and still breathable. It does not have too much stretch to it due to the nylon face. It will feel different than a Polartec Fleece, which does not have the softshell outerlayer.

    • Q:

How close to windproof is this jacket?
      Asked on 1/26/2012 by Anonymous

      1 answer

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

The Transfer will block most of the wind. It is made with a bonded soft shell fabric with a nylon face that will keep out the elements except in extreme conditions.

    • Q:

Could you tell me how long this jacket is from shoulder to the bottom, and also how long the arms are? I am a slim 6'3" and am wondering if I need a large or an extra large.

Also, is the Ferrosi hoody similar size to this?

      Many thanks.
Asked on 12/30/2011 by Anonymous from Sheffield, UK

      1 answer

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

The length of the jacket as measured from the neck seam is 29" in Large and 30" in XL. The arm length in L as measured from the Center of the Back to the Cuff is 36" and 37" for Large. As far as the difference between them the sizing is relatively similar the arm lengths are the same but the Ferrosi is 1/4" longer, the Ferrosi is more of a spring jacket so it will be less water resistant and a bit more breathable than the Transfer
