This is an awesome jacket. I just returned from my first trip to Patagonia and in planning for that trip I realized that my existing jacket wasn't anything like new i.e. water proof. Given the notorious weather and huge approaches (not to mention the cost and planning for the trip)I thought it was time for an upgrade. This jacket is great. Water proof, tough and light! The sizing works well for me. I am 6'1" and 175lbs w/ long arms and the large fits really well. I can wear 1-3 layers under if they are thinish and then put a puffy over for belays etc. I have now used this jacket for about 4 months; skiing, climbing and hiking in the rain. The only place for improvement would be with the zippers. The pulls are a little on the small side and given the water tight design they are not the easiest things to get started. I'm sure it doesn't matter to most but when you're in the thick of it on a climb with wind and snow, tied into a belay and managing a bunch of stuff, the last thing you want to do is take your gloves off to mess with a zipper. It would be nice if OR gave you some extra long and large zipper pulls so you could change the ones you wanted to. Or they could make a larger zipper tab and you could just use some cord.

Comments about Outdoor Research M's Mentor Jacket:

I've had the the Mentor jacket for about eight months now and I LOVE it. I've used it during ice climbing trips and several alpine ascents. This is the fourth Gor-tex jacket I've owned and it's by far the best.

It's cut perfect for an athletic body. I'm 71 inches and 180 pounds with an athletic build. It fits nice with just a base layer (not like a trash bag) and still doesn't seem too tight with a medium thermal and a puffy underneath.

It packs down to almost nothing yet is pretty rugged.

The one and only thing that I have to complain about with this jacket is the zippers are not very beefy. They haven't ripped or malfunctioned but are a little to small to grab when wearing thick gloves. Other than the zippers this jacket is absolutely perfect.

Comments about Outdoor Research M's Mentor Jacket:

I used this jacket this winter in Western Montana and it did not disappoint. As we all know, the precip fell relentlessly this winter. Much of the snow at Montana Snowbowl was wet. The jacket shed rain and wet snow like nothing. It also is a bomber windbarrier. The weight is unbelievable. My only complaint is the upper part of the jacket is a bit snug. I usually wear XL jacket/shirts but opted for a Large in the Mentor. The fit is athletic and I can wear 3-4 layers and not feel too confined.

I've worn this jacket climbing ice, mountaineering, skiing, and through multi-day downpours backpacking in the summer. It is completely weatherproof and breathes fairly well for a shell of this weight. The huge pit zips allow even more breathability when it's warm out.
This jacket has withstood granite scrapes, skiing tight trees and thick NW bushwacking without any signs of tears or loose stitching. I feel like I'll use this for many years to come.

Best Shell I have ever had! Somehow, unknown to me, a small tear in the shell appeared as if from narnia itself...dang jabberwalkies! Well I sent it in to OR and got the best service response and prompt return in customer service history! The new shell has held up as good as the old one and I'm sure this time I did in fact abuse it ninja fighting and tree bashing with high alpine adventuring!

I use this jacket for alpine climbing and mountaineering. So far it has never let me down. My first test for this jacket was Mt Baker up in Northern Washington. I spent a week on the mountain in all sorts of weather. At the base of the peak it rained for about 3 days straight and this jacket never got water-logged. Moving up the mountain it snowed, and the jacket still worked perfectly.
I am 6 feet and 180 lbs and the large fits me perfect. I highly recommend this jacket. Outdoor Research is an awesome company with high quality gear!

Comments about Outdoor Research M's Mentor Jacket:

I'm a jacket freak. I love to research and try on various jackets and I fell in love with this one when I first saw it, and got on one knee after trying it on. I've owned this jacket for over 3 years now and have used it in some pretty gnarly conditions, and it has not let me down. The versatility of this jacket is second to none. I've climbed, hiked, biked, paddled, skied, and even ran in this jacket-it is a do all jacket for every season. All of the features are real-life usable features that are perfectly done and it compresses down to the about the size of a nalgene bottle. The fit is right on-I'm 6'2" 173, slim build with above average muscle tone and a 19.5 torso and the medium fits great. Overall I'm very happy with it and will probably get another when OR come out with a red one.

I am very disappointed there are no large inside pockets for a water bottle or skins on this technical piece. This jacket would be extremely versatile and totally awesome if only there were large inside pockets to keep things from freezing while mtn climbing or BC skiing. Otherwise, it's sweet.

The Mentor is a trim fitting jacket, so it will be more true to size. If you are looking to layer and are on the edge of two sizes, I would recommend going the size up.

I would recommend the medium for you. The jacket is designed to accommodate light layering so this should fit well.

                    Hi All,

I am very excited to get this jacket, but need some advice on size. I am 5'9" 185, athletic build. Looking to layer for skiing as well. Would you recommend a medium or large?

A large should fit well with enough space for layering when needed.

Since this is a trimmer fitting jacket than some of our other rain shells, I would recommend staying with the same size that you are wearing, an XL.

                    Q:

I am 5'11 1/2 160-170 lb depending. Waist 32-33, sleeve 34, Chest 41. Athletic build and use pretty streamlined layering(ultra thin base layer, Patagonia 3/4 zip wool blend(thin), and a PolyPro fill vest when needed. I have seen varied results on what size to buy. I must be in the middle of M and L. On the specs the L jumps up a lot in size it seems. Thanks for the help.

Hi Doug, thanks so much for your question. The Mentor jacket is designed to accommodate layers similar to what you describe. Based on the measurement you have provided, a medium should be a good fit. For a medium, the full chest measurement of the jacket (which is measured 1" below the armhole) is about 45 1/2" and the arms measure 36".

                    Q:

Could you please help with size, I’m 5’6, 150 lbs, 32” waist, athletic build. I went to a local shop to try for size, they didn’t have a Mentor but a Furio jacket. So I tried in Small & medium in the Furio for sizing.

I tried it with a medium weight fleece since this is my intended purpose. In the Small, sleeve & length of jacket is perfect but it does feels a bit tight, very fitting should I say. For the medium, the sleeves & length of jacket is indeed a bit longer but it does feels better & not as tight as the small. The shop assistant said Small fits me fine as the jacket was meant to be this way. All my other jackets including mountain hardwear I wear a medium. Can you recommend, seems like i’m in between sizes. Thanks.

                      A:

Hello Bern, thanks for your question. The Furio and Mentor Jackets have slightly different fits. The Furio is designed with a standard fit and the Mentor with a trim fit. If you feel tight in a small in the Furio, then I would recommend a medium in the Mentor. They will have the same sleeve lengths, but since the Mentor is a trim fit it will feel trimmer than the Furio in a small. The main concern is your comfort. If you feel more comfortable in a medium, in the Furio or Mentor, then the sleeves have hook and loop adjusters you can tighten to keep them above your hands.
