Details

A monster of a jacket, the rugged Alibi Jacket™ is a combination of different materials strategically placed in all the right places. Tough, weatherproof fabric is used on the hood and shoulders where the elements hit hardest, a warm soft shell lower body holds in core warmth while providing breathability, and stretch fabric along the torso allows easy, unrestricted movement for the longest reaches. A two-piece hood, with an inner helmet liner and an outer shell, keeps the head warm and protected so your focus can stay on the next move. Engineered for motion, an alpine cut minimizes bulk allowing the jacket to move with you while providing protection from the specific conditions you meet in alpine and ice climbing environments.

I live in New Mexico and hike up the Sandia Mountain three days a week. The mornings start out cold, but when the sun comes out it warms up quite bit. The terrain is quite rugged: large boulders, cactus and granite projections. The Alibi jacket is perfect for me because it breathes great and it has the Ventia fabric on the arms and shoulders that can stand up to the pine boughs and cactus thorns. It has all the bells and whistles you would want in a jacket and is I think its a good value. I'm 5'9" 175 lbs. and I used to take a medium OR jacket, but I took a large in this particular model. Personally I think OR has made their jackets a little smaller fit than before–I've read reviewers who have mentioned the same thing. The only problem is that the sleeves are too long for me, but I just turn them up one hem.
I have one suggestion for the designers at OR, When you unzip the hem-to-pit zippers all the way open, the snap tab at the bottom sticks out and hits your arm when you are walking. I think it would be a good idea to be able to snap the tab back inside the jacket to alleviate this problem.

    • Q:

I am 5'6", 140lbs, chest measurement 36". By the chart I'd be a small size for this jacket, but I intend to layer a light to mid-weight fleece under this piece. Should I size up to a medium, or does the sizing info on this product already take an insulating layer into account?

        A:

This jacket is a trim fit, but it is designed to have room to layer with mid to light layers underneath.

    • Q:

I love my Mithril jacket, but to be honest, the color choices aren't very exciting. I'd also like it better if the hood fit over my helmet when I'm skiing or ice climbing. Maybe the Alibi is the jacket I'm looking for - the colors are great and the hood sounds righteous ... is it as warm as, or similarly warm to, the MIthril? Is the fit similar?

      Thanks!

        A:

They are relatively similar in warmth, the Alibi is categorized as trim fit while the Mithril is a Standard Fit

What is the best way to care for Ventia to maintain waterproof protection?

        A:

We generally recommend you wash it with Nikwax Tech Wash for cleaning, and spray it with Nikwax TX direct for reviving the finish. You can use regular laundry soap as long as it is not too harsh, generally organic soaps work well, do not use fabric softeners. Are the hem to bicep pit zips two way?
      Asked on 12/25/2011 by Anonymous

      • A:

The vents are two-way zips but they end at the armpit, not the bicep.

    • Q:

Is the Alibi Jacket a trim or standard fit? Also, I've owned OR Jackets in the past, and I wore a medium size. Yesterday when I tried a couple of jackets on, the mediums seem a little snug. Your products used to run a little large, have you started to cut them a little smaller? Thanks in advance for your reply.

        A:

The Alibi jacket is a trim fit. The sizes will not have changed, but the styles do change slightly over the seasons.

would this work in heavy rain or would there be some soak through?

        A:

A hard shell jacket is going to be your best bet in keeping dry in heavy rain. This jacket, our Alibi, is made with a waterproof Ventia material on the hood and arms but, being a softshell jacket, can start to feel clammy when you're out in wet conditions.

      • A:

I can't speak for *heavy* rain, but my 2009 version has dealt fine with everything I've thrown at it, from heavy snow to west coast rain to nasty days in the Andes. Admittedly I'm a cheapskate, but it's served well enough as a raincoat for me. Though OR is right, if you're out in the rain for hours on end, there's certainly going to be some soak-through.

    • Q:

I'm 6'5" and 185 pounds. I typically get an XL just because of sleeve length but would prefer a L. Can you tell me what the sleeve length is for the L and XL?
Asked on 4/28/2011 by Anonymous from Kirkland, WA

      1 answer

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

The sleeve length for the Large is 36" and the XL is 37". This measurement is from the center back to the cuff. Thanks for your question!
