Great jacket with only one flaw

    By Doug

    Pros

    • Looks good
    • Perfect Fit
    • Waterproof

    Cons

    • Hood Draw Strings

    Best Uses

    • Cool Or Wet Weather

I use use this jacket literally every day during the spring, winter, and fall. During the winter I have to use a thin wool sweater as a base, as the jacket isn't too warm. Although with the sweater, it's warm enough to ride ride my bike to and from school all winter long in N. Idaho. It's also very waterproof. No amount of wet snow has ever penetrated this jacket. It's breathability is moderate. It's not a garbage bag and it's not goretex, but it suits my needs.

The jacket does have one major flaw. The placement of the drawstrings for the hood inside the collar is terrible. I use them every day, and they make me angry every day. They may only be accessed by unzipping the jacket about eight inches. Additionally, the cordlocks on the drawstrings are abrasive to the chin when the jacket is zipped all the way up. This feature was so pervasive that I have actually altered the jacket to be adjusted from the outside of the collar, and have sewn a piece of fabric over the cordlock so it won't scratch my face. OR, I know you put the drawstrings inside the jacket because it looks better, but you need to fix this problem.

Rant aside, I would buy this jacket again.

        Great all-around jacket.
I found the fit to be an excellent athletic fit (obviously a personal thing). I am 5'10" and 165.
Just be aware that it is not meant for much warmth. The "fleece" lining is very light.

This quickly became my favorite jacket to wear. It was a last minute purchase but ended up being my best one of the season. The jacket is very durable and fits very well. I didn't expect it to be totally waterproof but it was. The inner fleece makes for a warm jacket in moderatly cold days. With this on under my OR Stormproof jacket while winter camping, I have no worries of ever getting cold.

            Comments about M's Mithril Jacket!":

I don't think I could ask more from a jacket. I have been everywhere from skiing glaciers in the Alps, trekking the Andes, and boating down rivers in the Amazon rainforest during a tropical rainstorm in this jacket. I have worn this from -10C to +30C. This is the only jacket I bring "adventure" travelling because it works well in so many different climes. It is completely waterproof. Even if the water gets past the DWR, it will not soak through the garment. The reinforced rim on the hood is nice because it provides good shade. The jacket has a good insulation level to provide versatility while being packable. Obviously it needs a good base+mid if you want to use it in really cold weather. I also like the fact that it is stylish enough to wear around the city. In most cases, wearing technical clothing in the concrete jungle makes one look like a clueless idiot, but I'm glad this jacket is an exception. Once again, good travelling gear. I felt just as comfortable wearing this jacket in NYC as I did in a hike though the Rockies.I bought this jacket for[...]. Great value.

This is the first OR product I purchased and I love it. It is my standard "go-to" jacket for cold, windy or wet weather. I'm a ski instructor and have even used it for skiing with a down sweater underneath. After wearing it for a couple of weeks I called OR to see if they made ski pants from the same material. If you want a durable soft shell jacket for everyday use, hiking, backpacking or ski touring you can't go wrong with the Mithril jacket.

I live on the East Coast and I'm looking for a Softshell that provids some warmth and rain protection for spring and fall when it tends to be damp, cold, and windy at the same time. I'm wondering if this coat or the Alibi is the better fit. I have rain gear for when it's truely wet, but I wasn't sure if the Alibi would cut the wind like the Mithril?

The Mithril utilizes a waterproof/windproof Ventia laminate throughout the jacket while the Alibi only incorporates the laminate in the shoulders, hood and upper arms.

                  • Q:

I used to own a Mythril. Sadly, it was recently stolen. I'm looking to replace it and I'm wondering if the Mithril or the Mithrilite is a better jacket for me. The things I'm looking for:

                    1) I really liked my Mythril but it sometimes wasn't quite warm enough; I definitely wouldn't want a jacket with less insulation.

                    2) The lack of pit zips on the Mythril always bothered me and the Mythrilyte has those.

                    3) I really liked the ajustable hood on the Mythril. I like to be able to pull the back draw string and be able to turn my head without the hood impeding my view. How does the Mythrilite compare?

                    Thanks much!

The Mithrilite is a lighter weight jacket and would not be as warm as the Mithril. Based on the first priority you referenced I would recommend staying with the Mithril Jacket.

A (really) small section of the waterproof tape is peeling off on the left arm side of my jacket here. I already tried to glue it yet it still leaks a bit under heavier downpours. Any suggestion to what I should do? I'm considering following' a friend's suggestion and just using stronger glue but there's already a bit of a glue stain from the first try at mending it. Really obvious on the color considering it's in a really bright green.

Good question, the best way to wash the jacket is by hand, if you use a washing machine a front load or top load without an agitator is best. For soap Nikwax tech wash works great.
