Comments about Outdoor Research M's Motto Jacket!":

I was looking for a soft shell with a slimmer cut that would still fit comfortably and offer some flexibility for the slopes. This jacket has exceeded my expectations in terms of features. My problem is that I have large shoulders. I would prefer to wear a L in terms of the cut, but my shoulders get in the way and I can't zip it up with a L. So I got an XL. Now this jacket is still amazing and probably meant for someone over 6'. I'm right at 6' and the sleeves are slightly too long. I do like that that it is longer in the back, as to keep your rear dry on the lifts. The zip out powder skirt and zip off hood are great features. The hood is large, but that's so it fits over a helmet... no complaints here, just cinch it down. When comparing jackets, there are only two softshells that the Recreational Co-op I purchased it at carries, that are waterproof and not just DWR. This one and the Arcteryx that has less features, no hood, etc. and costs more. You can't go wrong with this jacket. The features, waterproofness, etc. are equal to that of jackets twice the price. Not perfect, but a great value. Got it on sale @ a known Recreational co-op. Combine the lifetime return from the store I bought it at and the Lifetime guarantee on OR products, there is no better deal for your dollar.

I use this jacket for backcountry skiing, but find it a bit heavy for the uphill. It's great for the downhill. Where I really love this jacket is ice climbing! It is plenty durable enough for ice falling on me, stays waterproof when there is water running over the ice, and is super warm, even on the coldest days in the Adirondacks (-20F days of climbing)

I really liked this jacket to start. It fits well and is warm and waterproof. I have one problem and that is in the neck area. The zipper and the neck material is very stiff. It is so stiff that when zipped all the way up the material at the top digs into my chin and the fold a few inches down digs into my chest. I really want to love this jacket but cant because of this problem. It has become so uncomfortable that I wont zip it all the way up. If I could return it I would.

This is a great soft shell for when it starts to get chilly, and perfect for layering with a fleece when it's really cold. Coupled with some other layers, it's good to go in the worst conditions. It's kept me quite warm on the slopes when the sun sets and the lift is moving slowly. The hood may be a bit small for larger helmets, and the pockets are higher than I would like. But the little details like the back stash pocket, and the inside media pocket are nice touches.

        • Q:

How warm is this jacket by itself? I bought one in medium and one in large, and the medium one fits nicely with a short sleeve shirt and insulated long sleeve biking jersey underneath, but is a bit snug with a fleece jacket. Is this going to be warm enough for 15-20 degree mornings while skiing or should I keep the larger size for more layers?

The Motto has a nice fleece lining, but whether more layers are needed will depend on your body type. Do you get cold easily? How many layers do you normally wear? You can always contact our Customer Service department for more guidance: info@outdoorresearch.com
