Men's Mentor Jacket™

Style# 55103OR

Ruggedly designed, tested and built for ultimate storm-worthy protection in remote, big-mountain environments, the Mentor Jacket™ is a staple of the alpinist's quiver. The Fall ’13 Mentor™ utilizes a blend of lightweight, waterproof, breathable 40D and durable 70D three-layer GORE-TEX® Pro, updated with the latest Gore® technology, improving breathability by 28%. The design precisely targets high-wear areas with the 70D fabric -- like the hips and shoulders, places where a harness or pack often abrades the fabric – allowing us to shave weight in this fully featured alpine shell. The result is a racehorse with a workhorse pedigree: a lightweight, minimal and bombproof jacket offering reliable protection and technical performance in extreme conditions.

Great shell, plenty of features (Review by Sam)
Quality

I've used this jacket for the past two days skinning Saddleback in Maine, so I can't truthfully comment on long-term durability, but the features have been great thus far. I was looking for a waterproof shell with enough room to layer a fleece or insulated jacket, and this fits the bill despite being described as having a "trim" fit. It's nowhere near as trim as my old Arc'teryx Seeker Comp (Sidewinder) or the OR Lodestar, which has a VERY athletic fit. I've been using the Mentor in conjunction with a wool base and OR's Havoc hoody. After fifteen minutes of uphill, I've had to shed the Havoc, unzip the pits, and remove my helmet. The Mentor does a really nice job of venting, while still keeping you covered, especially with the high collar in front. The Mentor's hood fit perfectly over a Bern helmet during snow squalls.

Other things I like: the heavier denier nylon on the shoulders and waist - essentially where your pack straps and kidney belt make the most contact. It seems the jacket will hold up well when touring with a backpack.

One thing to note, should this be an issue for you, is that there's a lot of material in the sleeves. They feel pretty baggy, even with an insulated layer. No big deal so far. Separately, I recall a few reviews discussing snug armpits that restrict movement. This doesn't seem to be an issue with the 2013 Mentor. I'm a fairly slim 6'3", 175lbs, with a 34" sleeve length and I went with a medium, if that helps... definitely enough room in the pits and plenty of sleeve length.

HARD shell (Review by Hopper)
Quality

I have had a Mentor for 2.5 years. I have used it ice climbing, winter camping and backpacking. The full side zips are fantastic for ventilation and wearing a harness. The hood fits over a climbing helmet and adjusts well when not wearing a helmet. It is indeed completely water proof and bombproof. OR's infinite warranty is also great, although i would be surprised if I needed it with this one. The Mentor is well built. I would love to have another one!

Men's Mentor Jacket™ (Review by By PacNWest)

This jacket is lightweight, but durable. It is a solid shell for all types of weather. Might be a bit much for a summer rain, but it doesn't claim to be for that. Been using it in the cold alpine, snow and rain, general ugly weather. It has performed admirably. The fit is perfect (6'6"250lb wearing the XXL). Roomy enough for a puffy layer on your down time, but fit to the torso during active bouts. Sleeve length is good. Breathes well. Well done. The only change would be the cuff velcro, it looks pretty and lines up with the strap, but the velcro portion could be extended another inch or so for a bit more snugness.....definitely not a deal breaker however. I spend a lot of time outdoors(work and play) and fluctuate between brands on my exterior shell, but this is one of my favourites thus far.
