I just got these today and it's October 17th so I can't comment on warmth. So I'll confine my comments to fit and build quality. I'm 6' tall and weigh 215 lbs. I don't have particularly large or meaty hands. But, based on a pair of gloves I bought last season being fairly tight in a L size and some reviewers feedback indicating these run a little tight, I ordered the Highcamp mitts in XL. I'm happy with the fit. I'd rather have a little room in a glove or mitt than have it too tight.

The build quality is very nice with excellent attention to features like dummy loops so you don't lose a mitt on the chairlift and one hand pull closure of the gauntlet as well as one hand loosening. They aren't as bulky as the photos would leave you to believe. That's a plus for me. And they are really easy to pop on or off. The fleece inner mitt stays put nicely between the velcro tabs and the sticky silicone palms.

As for warmth, I'll have to wait til the mountains open this year but that's the least of my worries. The Highcamp mitts seem really well designed and put together. And mitts always seem twice as warm as gloves for me. Don't know why I bought gloves last year. I'll keep the gloves around for days above 25F but most days, I'll be nice n comfy in these mitts.

Based on competitive products, I'm happy with the value at this price. I bought these mitts based on experience with an Outdoor Research windstopper beanie last year and the Highcamp mitt doesn't disappoint.

  • Q:

Can the liners be bought separately? The shell is waterproof and I find that my liners get wet from sweat during the day. I would like to just carry an extra liner or two and swap them as I need to.

      A:

The liners are not sold separately. However the Pl 100 Gloves are very similar and would be good for a back-up liner.

  • Q:

are the liners a glove (separate fingers) or a mitt, what are the warmest mitts with mitt liners and leather palm you have?

      A:

The liners are in fact a mitt but as far as the warmest mitt with a removable liner definitely look at the Alti Mitts, the comfort range is -40/-20 F (-40/-28 C) and are made with GORE-TEX technology

  • Q:

What is Ventia? Is it a laminate or a coating? Is it 2, 2.5 or 3-ply?
    Asked on 1/9/2012 by Anonymous

      A:

Ventia is a generally 3 layer laminate. We use it most in our softshells. If it is in a glove it is used in an insert style, where the layer sits between the outer and inner layers of the glove.

  • Q:

Can those Mitts be used for alpine skiing?
Asked on 12/28/2011 by Anonymous from Montreal, Canada

    1 answer

    • A:

I use them for skiing and find I have no problems gripping poles and they are no more bulky than a pair of warm gloves. I did not have to adjust my pole straps to fit these versus my gloves. The only issue I have is that the leather on the thumb and palms is very slick which makes grabbing small items (zipper pulls) difficult.

  • Q:

if you are using a ventia dyy shell, why aren't the seams sealed?
Asked on 10/6/2011 by Nancy the Newbie from Anchorage AK

    1 answer

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

The Ventia Dry waterproofing is layered as an 'insert' in the glove. The layering includes the outer soft shell, followed by the waterproof Ventia insert which is then finished with the fleece lining. The Ventia insert is a smooth finished lining and does not have any seaming as you see on the outside of the mitt. As a result, you have a solid layer of protection against the rain without the need for seam taping.

  • Q:

Are the Highcamp mitts seam taped?
    Asked on 9/18/2011 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

No, we do not use seam tape on the Highcamp glove. If you have any other questions, please let us know.
