    • The Coldest Nw Days

This jacket is by far the best down jacket that I have ever owned! It is unbelievably light and packable, and of course warm! The Pertex Quantum fabric is so compressible that it very easily and fits under a shell--I have a medium + a medium OR Inertia shell--but the fit also allows it to fit over the shell to be used during breaks.

This always goes in my pack, because it is so light and compressible that there is no reason not to bring it. This combined with my OR neoplume pants and a lightweight emergency bivy, are my backcountry insurance plan.

The jacket can pack into it's own pocket, but the opening in a good deal smaller than the actual pocket, and I worry about damaging the pertex material by rubbing it against the zipper teeth too many times. I also find that packing it this way stresses the zipper a bit, and can make it a little sticky. The jacket is also more compressible than the size of the pocket. For all these reasons, I bought a small OR rolltop stuff sack, and I compress this jacket and the neoplume plants in there as much as possible, and then roll the top down, essentially vacuum sealing it. I think it will last longer this way, and it also guarantees that my down stays dry in my pack.

Can't imagine a better down jacket for the NW, and I definitely won't be getting rid of this one anytime soon. At 6', 170, a Medium is totally perfect.

Also, it would be great if there was an equivalent OR bottom layer. Make one, and I'll buy it for sure!

      • A:

I just bought one of these. It is sewn through. However, it does have a liner on the inside so it looks like it isn't sewn through. Not sure if the liner will help with wind resistance at the seams or not. So far I haven't had any issues with the warmth due to the construction (it’s been in the single digits here). It is thin enought that it works well under a shell on those super windy days.

The jacket is true to size so I'd go with what you normally wear (I'm 5'11" 165lbs and wear a Med if that helps).
