At this point, I have primarily used this coat for general use around town. I used it once on a deer hunting drive (I could carry an extra layer for standing that was orange by turning the coat inside out). This worked out pretty well aside from the crinkly aspect of the material (but who cares this was not designed for that purpose).

I like that you can wear this coat with a light layer in windy/light rain/snow conditions. The cut is just enough that i can wear a light fleece or other clothing underneath without it feeling bulky. After that, this coat becomes too restricted. For reference, I am 5'10 155lb with a thin build. I wear a medium coat. When this item was purchased, I was looking for an insulated jacket to wear in marginal conditions (described above) or something to throw on as a layer underneath a hard/soft shell. I basically was looking for light insulation with a hood. I needed something that fit the niche between a softshell (when i'm moving) and a full on puffy (standing around)

At my size I would have bought the next size if i wanted to use this coat as an over layer. For this purpose I rely upon a non OR down coat or an OR Maestro.

I love this coat for the intended purpose, but find a few flaws. The stitching is somewhat suspect. With minimal use, the stitching in the arms is starting to come undone and the chest pocket has a hole in it. If this coat was a year old, I probably wouldn't care about these issues, but I have these problems with about 2 months of use.

A second issue, is the size of the hood. This hood will definitely not fit over a helmet (not the end of the world). My issue is that it barely fits over my head. I wear a 7 1/4 fitted hat for reference and find that the hood could be a tad bigger to fully cover my head. the hood comes out enough to sit over my forehead. I would prefer if it was a tad bigger and allow me to crank down the cinches.

Another small flaw is the zipper is sticky. From the first use i have not had an easy time zipping this coat. this may be my particular coat, but i find the zipper is just not smooth. For reference, I wear OR Maestro, OR Axiom, and OR Ferossi jackets. I have not had this issue with these other coats.

With a small change in hood design and possible upgrades in durability, I would rate this coat five stars and would recommend. However, at MSRP my experience suggests that it is slightly above average and the market offers better options.

I live in Alaska and this piece is awesome. Its lighter than a sweatshirt, but oh so warm. Never seem to overheat wearing this, it breaths very well. I haven't worn it as an outter layer, so I can't comment on its wind stopper ability.

I use this around town, and on hiking, backpacking and snowshoeing trips. In the winter, when I head to town for the day, I always grab the havoc--it is the most versatile jacket I have. For our PNW winters, you can just about always get away with this over a t-shirt, or a light sweater if it's colder. The fully-adjustable hood really helps when it's breezy. If you get caught in some rain, you're fine too; I've stayed almost totally dry walking around Seattle in the rain for about an hour on several occasions. And if it gets sunny and warm, it's lightweight, and fits easily my messenger bag.

In the backcountry, it layers very well over a baselayer or a fleece. You can have it as your outer layer, or under a shell if it's really wet. All the pockets come in handy camping, and it doesn't bind or catch on the other layers. It's ability to deal with cold, wind, and wetness ensure that it's always in my pack.

              My Favorite Jacket

              By Donnie- Sweet Home Alabama

I am not an mountain climber or hiker but I do have a thing for jackets. This one was exactly what I was looking for- on the lighter side but packs a powerful punch. Pound for pound (or ounce for ounce) the best jacket I have. When I move back South (soon) this will probably be fine for almost the coldest of days. But while I am still in Ohio I will still require a heavy weight for the coldest days.

It has all of the top notch ingredients- Windstopper, primaloft, YKK and it shows. The collar sits neatly if the hood is not in use. With the hood up it's not too loose so it's less likely to fly off at the slightest wind. But it is also easily adjustable. Soft lining in the zippered side pockets. It has a slightly recessed zippered Napoleon and a right interior pocket.

I don't normally write reviews but felt compelled to write this one. I am extremely impressed with the looks and functionality of this jacket!

This is a great product and exactly what I need for the wet weather in Alaska. There are a few improvements I would like to see. I am an ounce counter so I would like the jacket to come in under a pound (mine is 17.6 oz). The zipper could probably be cut down a bit, and possibly take a bit of insulation out of the hot spot areas...pits. On the plus side the windstopper material is awesome, and makes the shell more abrasion resistant than my OR transcendent jacket.

The fit on the Havoc and Chaos is a "Standard". However, the chest on the Havoc is a little trimmer than the Chaos. It sounds like the Medium Havoc will fit you just fine.

I wonder if this is a good choice for riding the lifts here in the Cascades? Would this jacket with something like a light or mid-weight sweater and a poly pro zippy tee leave me in good shape for the rides up the lifts? I'm looking for something that is not too heavy but reliably warm. I am trying to keep from having too many layers. Thanks!

                  A:

The Havoc would not be a preferred option for this application. The Havoc is designed more as a layering piece but can be used as an outer layer as well. Just not as a ski/snowboard jacket. The Chaos Jacket would be the better option in this case as it is more of a jacket and would perform much better under these conditions.

I recently purchased the OR Alibi jacket to be my winter shell for hiking and was thinking of using the OR Havoc as my insulation/mid-layer. I was wondering how this jacket would layer under the Alibi and if you believe it would be too warm for New England Winters. Any other suggestions for a mid-layer? I really do like what the Havoc has to offer as it seems like a great fall/winter early spring kind of jacket. Thanks!

The Havoc is a great all around jacket both as a layering piece and by itself. Additionally the Neoplume, Transcendent line and the Radiant collection would be great layering pieces for the Alibi and all other jackets.

No, it's not big enough to put a helmet under. It's very compressible, and you could probably get it under a helmet, but you'd have to do away with the hood adjustment on the back.

Do you think this would make a pretty good snowboarding jacket? Of might it be vulnerable to tearing and damage if you suffered some hard spills in pretty packed and icy snow? Or perhaps not be loosey-goosey enough in the fit, so to speak? It looks like a great jacket. But what about snowboarding?

I would be worried about damage on icy snow. It's pretty tough, but doesn't have a heavy shell. The looseness of the fit should be fine though.
