When it comes to the Ferr-awesome jacket, I've already got my moneys worth. I take it along on any adventure that promises to have variable temperatures(cool to hot) and some precipitation. It is a wonderfully versatile piece for high activity level trips as it will keep you dry and cool by letting your body breath. The fabric stretches to accommodate tons of movement without sacrificing comfort. Bottom line, you will love this jacket.

    Good Layering

    Pros

    • Fits well under harness
    • Form fitting
    • Partially wind-proof
    • Stretchy
    • Tough

    Cons

    • Not totally wind proof

    Best Uses

    • Add a puffy at belays
    • Mid layer for colder temp
    • Outer layer for mild temp

I really like this piece. It fits well, not too snugly, but not a ton of extra room either.

It fits well under a harness, doesn't pile up, and is really tough in blue-collar climbing situations. I would add a light weight puffy at belays to be really comfortable, however. I climbed all day in this, moves well and breathes well.

I am 6"1', have long arms, and a medium is a perfect fit.

    • Q:

How does this compare to the Ferrosi Windshirt?

        A:

They are made with the same material, the style is the only difference. This is a full zip jacket, while the windshirt is a pullover.

    • Q:

How snug should this jacket be. At 5'8" 167lbs. the medium fit comfortably, sat at my hips with a bit of length in the sleeves. One comment mentioned that at 6'1" a medium fit perfect. Should I be looking at a tighter fitting small instead.

        A:

This is meant to be a closer fitting jacket but still allow space for layering with a t-shirt. While it sounds like the medium should work fine, I would recommend trying on both sized and choosing which you prefer based on what you are most comfortable in.

    • Q:

does the material feel like a softshell (quasi-neoprene feeling) or does it feel like a thick rough rain coat with the rip stop component...asking because i'm used to the ripstop being a woven thin fabric used for insulated jackets. thanks.

        A:

The Ferrosi is made of a lightweight softshell material, and feels neither like neoprene or a thick rain jacket. If feels like a thin stretchy technical material.

    • Q:

Whats the difference between this and the cirque softshell?
      Asked on 5/24/2011 by Anonymous

      2 answers

      • Outdoor Research Employees

        A:

The Cirque has a much heavier softshell material than the Ferrosi Jacket. It will be warmer with less stretch. The Ferrosi is a very comfortable, ultra lightweight jacket.

Answered on 6/1/2011 by Outdoor Research CS from Seattle, WA
      • A:

The Cirque Jacket is designed as a "harsher" weather jacket. It has a waterproof finish and is highly wind resistant. Good uses for the Cirque jacket include backcountry skiing and extended backpacking trips (where highly variable weather is possible). The Ferrosi jacket is designed as a lightweight jacket for fast moving adventures where some wind/water protection may be needed, but breathability and movement are musts. The Ferrosi is also water resistant. Excellent uses for the Ferrosi are climbing, hiking, and cool morning jogs.
