Pros

  • Not bulky
  • Warm
  • Well-made

Cons

  • No Nose Wipe

Best Uses

  • Skiing

After dealing with several sub-par ski gloves in the past several years, I decided that it was time to spend a little more money on a pair of gloves and hopefully not have cold hands anymore. At the recommendation of a friend who climed Mt. Kilimanjaro using the OR Alti Gloves, I decided that if they were good enough for him at the top of one of the 7 summits, it would be good enough for my single digit ski days in New England.

The construction of the glove is fantasic - they aren't heavy, but they certianly aren't lightweight. The gloves consist of 2 parts, the exterior shell, and then an interior liner (not pictured here...but the interior liner is a vibrant red color). The interior liner is just a softshell insulated glove that fits right into the shell glove and also has an interior pocket for a handwarmer for added warmth. The shell glove also has a light amount of insulation on it. There is a draw cord to cinch the gloves closed, and the gaultlet is adequatly long enough to cover over any jacket. The tightening band is easy enough to pull and release while wearing the gloves as well.

The gloves are a little stiff at first, but do break in a little bit after wearing. They are thick gloves, but you still have good dexterity in using them (no issues with gripping my poles at all). The leather based palms offer good grip on anything you go to handle.

Overall, I can't say enough good things about these gloves. I used them in single digit temperatures last weekend skiing in New England and I didn't even need a hand warmer to keep my hands warm - my hands actually started sweating at one point! Only thing that I could see adding to the glove would be the inclusion of a nose wipe on the thumb or forefinger, but it's not worth docking a star for that.

  • Q:

What's the purpose of the little strap on the ring finger knuckle?

      A:

The carabiner loop is designed to allow the user to hang the gloves/mitts easily and out of the way when not in use. Locating the loop on the fore-end of the product lets the item hang without rain, snow etc. dripping into the glove or mitt.

I have Raynaud's Syndrome. My fingers get cold in any gloves (Arc'teryx, Burton, North Face...etc) How has the Alti been tested? I tried on a pair in REI today, but feel like these will be the same as others.

I too have Raynaud's Syndrome and have struggled to find any glove that can keep my fingers and finger tips from getting cold. It's driven my boyfriend nuts. After doing a TON of research, he got these gloves at REI (over Arc'teryx which we both love) for me for snowboarding partly because you can add the hand warmers but also because of the great reviews. Their maiden voyage was a 15 minute walk with my dog in 20 degree weather with 40 mi/hr gusts. Results: my finger tips were a little cold and my boyfriend was crushed. However, we just got back from a 2-day snowboarding trip at Bear Creek Resort in PA and my fingers and hands have never been warmer! Even without hand warmers, my hands and fingers were so toasty they were actually sweating (but not clammy!). I probably could have even used a thinner liner than the one provided. We were out for 4-6 hrs each day in 15-25 degree weather with 30-45 mi/hr gusts. Not once did my hands feel cold. Thank you, OR!

What is the string with the grey plastic disk for?

I call it the smart cord. This loop is to prvent you from freezing your fingurs or hands if you are not careful In the mountain and windy conditions this comes very handy, if you put it on correctly it will keep the gloves on your wrist and not down the mountain. Put your wrtist through it and pull the silver tab up your wrist at a distance that is cofortable then put the gloves on, when you take them off they will be simply hanging from your wrist now you can wipe your runny nose with two free hands and gloves by your side.

The "idiot cords" are to help prevent dropping the gloves as you loop the cords over and through your wrists.

  • Q:

Are the the Alti Gloves the warmest gloves OR makes? I use the Alti Mitts when I don't need all five fingers, but some tasks require greater dexterity. I'm basically looking for the most warmth I can get in a glove for use in very cold conditions.

Yes. These are the warmest gloves OR produces in the commercial line.

I have the meteor mitts in a M, and have lots of room for my liners. Do these run true to size, a bit large or small?

      A:

Generally mitts will run a little bigger to accommodate a variety of different kind of liners.

  • Q:

Are these Alt Gloves designed to be worn just by the outer shell during warmer days? Or is the shell just that - with no type of fabric liner/insulation without the removable liner? Also, is the removable liner waterproof/resistant as to be able to carry skis or hold poles during even warmer days? Essentially, can this glove act as a 3-in-1 glove?
    Asked on 10/11/2012 by Pond

      A:

The shell has a 100g of Primaloft One insulation and can be used independently. Though the liner can be used by itself, it isn't waterproof or windproof so I'd avoid using it in super wet/windy conditions.

  • Q:

    seams aretapedand sealed?
Is the shell truely a shell with a maximum 'nylon' outer and a waterproof layer fused to it??
My needs will be for a shell primarily but will involve the warmer liner occasionally

The Alti's are seam taped, but the shells are not a true shell. They have 100g of Primaloft One insulation. If you are looking for a non insulated waterproof glove then I would maybe check out the Stormcell. Thanks!

  • Q:

I am not sure if I should get the Alti Gloves or Mitts. My fingers get cold in almost every glove I have purchased so I am thinking its time for mitts again.

It was only -14C and my hands froze shovelling the driveway yesterday using my Dakine snowboard gloves.

      A:

Mitts will always be slightly warmer than gloves. Within the Alti's, the Mitts will be about 5 degrees warmer than the gloves.
