These are great pants/bibs. I just returned from my first trip to Patagonia and in planning for that trip I realized that my existing pants were not anything like new i.e. water proof. Given the notorious weather and huge approaches (not to mention the cost and planning for the trip)I thought it was time for an upgrade. In general I really like these pants. Water proof, tough and relatively light! The sizing works well for me. I am 6'1" and 175lbs usually 32x33 in jeans and the large fits really well. I can wear 1-2 layers under if they are thinish I have now used these pants for about 4 months; skiing, climbing and hiking in the rain. The only place for improvement would be with the zippers and with the venting. The pulls are a little on the small side and given the water tight design they are not the easiest things to get started. I'm sure it doesn't matter to most but when you're in the thick of it on a climb with wind and snow, tied into a belay and managing a bunch of stuff, the last thing you want to do is take your gloves off to mess with a zipper. It would be nice if OR gave you some extra long and large zipper pulls so you could change the ones you wanted to. Or they could make a larger zipper tab and you could just use some cord.
As for the venting. You can unzip from the very bottom or very top of the pants but what I really need is a separate zipper on the thigh about 1'6" long that's just for venting. Here is the problem. If you're hiking in snow (or loose scree) with a pack and or harness on then you can't unzip from the bottom because you will fill your boots and pants with snow or dirt. You can't unzip from the top without messing with your harness and/or pack because it's really inconvenient. Also, in my opinion, if you're using the side zips to vent you end up with to much loose fabric flopping around if your climbing.

      Comments about M's Mentor Pants:

I've only had these pants for about a month now and I've used them twice. I used them when summiting Mount Rainier and Mount Adams.

I really like how the pants are cut. I bought the medium size. I'm 71 inches and 180 pounds with a 33-34 inch waist and 32 inch inseam. They are not bulky around the waist and fit comfortably around the legs and the crotch.

The crotch is cut nice and high so you don't feel as if you will rip the pants if you are taking massive steps or climbing boulders on a scramble. They fit well with a thin and medium weight thermal underneath. They are probably a little too form fitting to wear puffy pants underneath but were really warm with just a baselayer at 25 degrees farenheit with 30 mph winds while moving.

I did get some wet snow to soak through the pants from glisading about 3000 feet in 15 minutes. I still have not found a pair of Gore-tex pants yet that will hold up to glisading long distances on wet snow so I guess they are the norm for Gore-tex. The zippers could be a little beefier but other than that, these pants are awesome.

Best pants ever! Exactly as good as you think they are and should be. Maybe some other colors would be nice. If you are thinking about these pants don't think any longer just get them! Love all the features and how small they pack up. If you have the right gear you will enjoy the outdoors so much more and these do just that.

          Comments about M's Mentor Pants:

Bought these on the recommendation of one of my Police Co-Workers. Don't know why I did not get them sooner. I am 6'5" 230 lbs with a 36 in inseam and was concerned that they would not be long enough. I got the xxl and they work just fine.

I bought them primarily for law enforcement work applications since they are designed in a way that allows me to wear my duty gear with them, without having the pants pull down.

I like the fact that they are completely waterproof and durable. I like that when I go back into the office to do paperwork I do not have to strip down to keep comfortable.

I dislike the fact that I need to take them home all the time instead of leaving them at work so I can use them for outdoor recreation activity on my days off. I may end up buying another pair.

Just wish that OR would have a 36in inseam available on their other pants.

I echo all the positive comments posted here by others. I especially like the design of the front zip which makes it easy to get these babies on and off without having to separate the top of the side zips, and also has a bottom-up zipper so watering a tree is easy with jacket on.

My only complaint is the ski edge protection. The tougher fabric inside the boot area is good for general abrasion but not enough to prevent slices from sharp edges, which I did within days of buying these. Now I have a piece of black tape on my otherwise new looking pants. I'd add a small cuff of even tougher stuff right around the bottom.

These are my go to hardshell pants. I wear them for in bounds skiing, wet ice climbs and snow camping. You could take a shower in these and not get wet. The heavier fabric at the ankle helps resist sharp ski edges and crampons and the internal gaiters are removable, so I can leave them at home when i am wearing my cascade gaiters. The full zip and detachable suspenders let you take off the pants without taking off your skis or pack. All around awesome Pro-Shell pant.

I really like the fit of the inseam, and the powder skirt around the boot is well thought out, you can adjust the size of the powder skirt for different sized boots. What I cant stand about these pants are the fit of the waist and bib portion, they look like clown pants on me. If the fit of the waist was true, like Patagonia or Marmot I would have given this a 5star.

These are my go-to hard shells for wet New England winters. I'll wear soft shells most winter days but when it's wet, like a drippy early season ice climb, these shells come out of the closet. I'll also wear them when the powder is a little on the thick side and I think I'll be getting wet. They can vent quite well on the uphills by zipping up from the boot to the knee and at the same time down from the waist to the knee--it's almost like wearing shorts at that point. I'm typically a 33x33 pant size, the large fits me perfectly.

I'm thinking about medium but read some reviews and other questions that for 33 waist medium would provide lots of space for layering. I'm afraid it's going to be too baggy!

These pants are a durable waterproof Goretex shell pant, so do not have a specific temperature range. The warmth will depend on how much you layer underneath.

they wouldn't work without the suspenders.

The suspenders are adjustable and elastic, but not removable.

What fit are these? I'm 6'4 and 165 lbs. 30 inch waist with 34 legs. Will these or any others fit my lanky chicken leg gangliness?

                        A:

They should be OK, the pants are long to begin with and since they are a bib you can sort of work with where they hit you on the waist better than normal pants. I would suggest a medium for the length or even large depending on what you normally take. The pants are pretty trim so they should not be too baggy even in a size large.

                      Q:

I am a 34 to 36 waist in most street clothes but only have a 30 inch inseam. My question is, can I get the large in a shorter length??

                        A:

Hello Duluth, thanks for your question. The inseam on the small is 31" and medium is 32". They cannot be ordered shorter, so I would recommend trying on the size small (35" waist), and since these will most likely be worn with boots, the slight extra height might be beneficial.

                      Q:

The sizing chart is a bit unclear about the range for each size. I'm a 33" waist -- should I get a medium or a large?

You would be in the medium range with lots of room to layer.
