  • Q:

I am confused- is the brim only stiff for oncoming winds or is it designed to resist wind from all sides without flapping...wet necks no good

      A:

The Force 9 features a rigid brim while the remaining side panels and rear utilize a reinforced foam to help maintain the shape of the hat. The front of the hat is more resistant to direct wind than the sides and rear.

  • Q:

Is this hat good for Tropical weather or more for California climates?

      A:

The Force 9 Sombrero is a Gore-Tex waterproof/breathable rain hat, with a light tricot lining designed to draw moisture away from the head. It is waterproof and designed to manage moisture, but is best suited to cooler weather (such as northern California in the winter). For tropical weather one of the following three styles would be worth considering: Sunshower Sombrero (style 82180), Sombriolet Sun Hat (style 80641), or the Helios Sun Hat (style 80700). The Sunshower converts from a waterproof hat to a sun/warm weather hat as it has a removable, waterproof raincover. The Sombriolet and Helios are sun hats that are quick drying, lightweight, and highly breathable, but not waterproof.

To summarize, the ideal hat would be as waterproof and breathable as your skin, providing near perfect regulation of temperature and moisture - the benefit being a comfortable environment around your head. A dedicated rain or sun hat can't accomplish both functions equally well, so choosing one of these is a function/benefit tradeoff. The versatility of the Sunshower allows it to function as a waterproof hat when necessary, and as a sunhat in warmer temperatures when maximum breathability is desired.
