This hat would rate five stars if the brim were a little stiffer. As it is, on windy days it tends to flip up, even though the brim is lined on the bottom. Other than that, it is a perfect sun hat for outdoor activities. The 360 degree venting allows heat to escape no matter which way the wind is blowing. The bottom of the top of the hat is also lined to protect the top of the head. It packs down to practically nothing in a suitcase, but pops right back into shape when you take it out. The brim is wide enough to provide shade for most of the head and neck, and always stays flat and stylish. Another great hat by Outdoor Research.

  Hand washing or spot cleaning with a mild detergent and air drying will be the most effective cleaning method to avoid damaging the shape and structure of the hat.

  Sounds like you are closer the the M. The circumference for the M is 57cm, L is 59cm, and XL is 61cm.

How still is this hat? In extremely windy conditions, facing into the wind, with the chin strap working, do the sides of the brim flip up?

  The brim of this hat is not reinforced and it is not designed to deal with high wind scenarios. On Sombriolet Sun Hat will work better in windy conditions.

Q:
Would this be the most highly recommended hat for desert conditions? I head sweat a lot and will be in some really hot dry conditions all day everyday for over a week trekking some serious terrain. I have your runner legionarre style hat, but I want something with 360 degree brim. I think I'll feel cooler. Please let me know your thoughts.

  I would go with something like the Sombriolet Sun Hat, the brim is larger on the back of the hat and it is slightly lighter. It should also dry quicker.

  The Papyrus Brim Hat does not have the foam stiffened brim that many of our other hats have which provides flotation. While it still may float, it has not been specifically designed to do so.

How does the "paper straw" woven fabric hold up in the event of, say, an unexpected downpour? Does it dissolve or get soft when it gets wet?

  It will not dissolve when it gets wet even though it's made with the woven paper straw. It is durable enough to withstand some rain and weather.

  The Papyrus Brim Hat is made with woven paper fabric, a similar feel to a straw hat. It is not crushable/packable as are many of our other sun hats.

  It packs flat, but I wouldn't roll it up. The top pops right back into shape. I've put a lot of miles on mine and it still looks like new.
