The jacket was very light and easily compressible for storing in a pack. The fit was good. The zipper was not always consistent, as it would get stuck when trying to start it. I used this jacket on a summit climb of Mount Rainier. Luckily the weather was not bad with an air temp of 10 degrees at the summit, but I was still a little cold at rest stops on the way up and walking around the summit. I feel as if the virtuoso was pushed beyond its limit on this trip.

    Comments about Virtuoso Jacket!":

Great jacket for the price and fits extremely well. Works very well for bely and the zipper easily slides up and out of the way of my harness.

This is not an overly warm jacket considering its fill weight. I attribute this to the low rating of the down and the sewn through construction instead of baffles.

I like this jacket and wear it a lot at the local crag but it is not my first choice for high altitude alpine climbing.

Great fit, great price, and great warmth. The Virtuoso is a bit roomy for under-layers and I have even been able to fit it under my Mentor Jacket when stuck outside in the rain. The really cool thing about this puffy is that the shoulders and arms have a water resistant fabric that sheds light rain and snow! Plus the down hood is helmet compatible and super warm. Having hook and loop closures on the wrists is great too because elastic wears out too quick. Lastly, the Virtuoso packs into its own pocket and makes a great pillow!

I'm super stoked on this jacket! The OR Company does a great job on building jackets to withstand nature. Plus this jacket just looks great! I would like to see in the future a better style of needlework to improve upon durability. And also when you are an avid boulder you will need to put this warm thing on and take it off many times depending on the project of the day. This being said the jacket just falls short in the Zipper size and the effort it take to line up and zip. Other than those two small things impressive jacket!

I love this jacket! I've skied in it on cold, dry days and I end up sweating! Jacket works for skiing but doesn't have a lot of the features of a true ski jacket (powder skirt, zip-vents) and can be tough to cool down when you get warm. Does have a water resistant fabric on the shoulders and sleeves that keeps you dry, but I don't know if I would want to be out in a blizzard in it.

My favorite uses is everyday wear on cold days, walking around town, and other non physical activity in the cold.

Super lightweight, and easy to move in! Nothing is more comfortable then a Puffy Jacket!

Can you explain the shoulder fabric water column rating? I don't know exactly what 1000mm means in this case. Thanks!

            1 answer

            • Outdoor Research Employees

              A:

"Water column rating" references a commonly used "rating" system for describing how water proof or water resistant a fabric is. In general, a 1" diameter tube is placed over the fabric. In the case of this 1000 mm rating, the column of water in that tube reached 1000 mm before the water started to leak through the fabric. This would be classified as "water resistant" and not "water proof". Let us know if you have any further questions!

              A:

Thanks for your question, with your height the XL is going to be the better fit in over all length in the arms and body. However with your weight the large would work. However we are sold out of larges till next July.
