Have had the Sombrero for years and still love it. It always comes out when rain threatens. I roll it up and stow in my pocket or side pouch of my pack. It takes a moment to give it some shape back, then it's back in action.

The hat is not rigid - it is more like a "boonie" cap so it will gain character the more you wear it.

I don't get why people like this hat. Yes, it does keep you dry but any wind over 5 mph and the brim is folding up letting the rain or sun into your eyes and face. I also wanted to use the hat kayaking. Well the interior layer that overheats your head in the summer but keeps you warm in the winter soaks up the water like a sponge that drips down on your face after you do a roll. Nice if it is a warm day with fresh water but in the ocean it is an annoying dripping of salt into your eyes. It does pack nice into any sack. It would be helpful if OR put a stiff plastic interior brim into the front to keep it from flipping up in the 5 mph wind.

A fantastic hat which was hard to get a couple of years ago since there was no dealer in Germany at that time. Meanwhile my wife owns this hat as well and we enjoy dry heads and faces while hikling in the rain.

I use this hat pretty constantly. I finally bought one last year, with my REI dividend, after wanting one for so long. I have a tendency to beatdown gear so I remained somewhat cynical about my purchase. But it has being a beautiful peice of gear! It provides shade in the high country of NC and then quickly protects from a blinding thunderstorm. Thats when you got to go flaps down! And I noticed during a summer downpour my rainjacket, no matter how breathable, would still get sauna-like in the hood. But the Sombrero provides equal rain protection with more breathability. Finally, there is a size adjuster in the hat so fitting is a breeze!

I have owned my red Sombrero about 15 years, and have worn it almost everyday for at least 10 years. I have lost it about once per year, but always manage to recover it. Now it is getting ragged and I want to buy a new one. I have to decide what colour. I am leaning towards yellow for night-time visibility, since I walk to/from work, often in the dark. I have tried a few other kinds of hats, but this floppy scrunchable pocketable style of sombrero is very practical for me. Be careful to get the right size, not too loose and not too tight. The neckstrap is essential to prevent losing the hat in windy weather, but is also valuable for hanging the hat on a chair or coathanger. I recently accidentally broke the neckstrap, and am really missing it.

              Comments about Seattle Sombrero:

I use the sombrero mainly for hiking.

The hat provides protection from the elements; rain, snow, and the sun.

The hat works great, but has a strange penchant to separate from the liner in high winds (30+MPH). The liner stays tight to your head, but the shell raises an inch up making you look slightly ridiculous.

The hat has a tendency to be warm in the summer, so unless it is a cold rainy day I would suggest you go with a lighter hat.

The sides of the hat fold up and attach to the dome with velcro. I have not had the itch to hunt crocodiles, so I leave them down.

                  Comments about Seattle Sombrero:

I've had this hat for near on 18 years and it has seen it all - blazing sun, snow and driving rain. Fit is good and can be adjusted easily with the Velcro tab. It it still as waterproof as the day I purchased it - in fact recently tested again on a 100 kilometer walk in Tasmania!

I like the wide brim including the slight extension at the back which provides great cover for the neck. Great for keeping blazing sun and driving rain at bay.

                  Highly recommended.

My Seattle Sombrero has served me well for many years. It still keeps my head perfectly dry and still looks as good as they day I bought it. However, it no longer sheds water like it used to. Can you recommend something I could apply to it to restore it's water repellant? I'd like to see the water bead and roll off rather than soak in to the outer layer of fabric.

It is not rated because it is a sun hat however, because it has a gore-tex laminate and thick fabric it actually blocks more sun than a general sun hat. If you were to hold up the Seattle Sombrero to the sun and another sun hat you would see way less light coming through. Our highest rating is UPF 50, the Seattle Sombrero if tested would most likley rate much higher due to all the layers and gore-tex laminiate.

We do not recommend ironing your Seattle Sombrero. Instead, if you would like to try to remove the crease, you can try steaming the area with the crease. We have designed a new hat with a much stronger brim for our Spring '12 line. Be on the lookout for the Force 9 Sombrero in next year's collection.

How long(or wide) is the brim on the back of the Seattle Sombrero? Is it longer than your new hat the Halo Sombrero?

                        A:

The Halo will have a wider brim in the back than the Seattle Sombrero. The brim on the back of the Halo is 3 3/4" and the brim on the back of the SeaSom is 2 3/4".

                    • Q:

Is there a recommended way to pack the Seattle Sombrero. Should I roll it up or fold it up. I don't want to cause any permanent folding creases or damages on the hat especially on the brim. I want to be able to bring it with me all the time but it is a rather big hat!

                        A:

The great thing about the Seattle Sombrero is it's packability. Unless it is crushed for prolonged perids of time, anyway you pack it, it should go back to it's original form. I might suggest rolling the sombrero and therefore not causing too many creases. Thanks for your question!
