Can't say enough good things about this

By NYC Ski Bum

Pros

  • Built in balaclava
  • Hood fits over ski helmet
  • Removable hood
  • Taped Zippers
  • Warm
  • Waterproof
  • Windproof

Cons

    Best Uses

    • Skiing

I am a skier. I usually like to ski tougher trails, moguls, and go into the trees. This jacket has kept me warm and dry through just about everything. If you're an aggressive skier like me, you can get by with just a flannel underneath this jacket. The windproofing has probably impressed me the most. I was at Sugarbush (VT) a few weeks back and it was -10 F at the summit, before wind chill. I was fine. When it is warmer, the vents are easy to access and are quite effective. I haven't had the opportunity to use it in significant rainfall yet, but when I've gotten blasted by snow guns (that are actually just shooting heavy wet snow that melts all over you), I've been fine. The built in balaclava is a nice touch for particularly cold days. Having the option to detach the hood is a nice touch as well. I highly recommend this jacket, especially if you are a fairly active skier.

    My go-to jacket

    By AudiMann Eric

    from Madison, WI

    Pros

    • Built in balaclava
    • Gore tex
    • Light insulation
    • Metal Lift Ticket Ring
    • Pockets galore
    • Ski Pass Holder
    • Waterproof zippers

    Cons

      Best Uses

      • Skiing

I use the Axcess jacket for skiing and anything in between, especially if the weather is nasty. I have the diablo color from 2 years ago. This jacket is lightly insulated so it's great for those colder days here in the midwest. On cold days (~below 0F-15F) I wear a heavier base layer. On warmer days (15F+ I run a little hot to begin with) a light base layer coupled with the jacket usually does it for me. It's nice to brush the car off in the morning because I stay warm and dry outside then inside the car I'm not sweating with the heat on. I have had zero issues skiing with the jacket. I've worn this while skiing at Jackson Hole (-25F at base +10 at top of Mtn) to the warm conditions of last winter (Deer Valley +40). I've found the jacket excellent in cold weather and OK in warmer conditions with the vents open. The terrain I ski is lift serviced terrain and sidecountry. There are tons of pockets. The lift ticket holder has a metal ring on it so you dont rip through the fabric with the old school metal wickets from small ski areas. Dedicated ski pass pocket. Dedicated MP3 holder with headphone cord pass through. Built in balaclava. Mesh gear bins. Outside pockets. There is no key clip in the jacket, but the Axcess pants has it. Powder/wind skirt is attached and not removeable, which is one less thing to get lost. Recco reflector. Hood is attached and not removeable (again- one less thing to lose). Hood has a little bill on it and a cinch cord in back to customize fit. The only downside I noticed was that this years model is more expensive. I have Axcess jacket and pants from 2 yrs ago. I wear it a lot and have washed it a couple times with no isues. It's not as "bomb proof" as a 3 layer Gore-Tex Pro shell, but then again I'm not a "pro" and don't ski like those guys in the films. I highly recommend this jacket to any all mountain, side county, and cold weather skiier.

what is the difference in insulation and warmth between this and the StormBound Jacket? This one says it is lightly insulated, but has a heavier OZ rating than the SB which is supposed to be your heaviest. How's that work?

I always seem to be between sizes in jackets. I'm 6'5" and around 190lbs with a 34 in waist. The issue I always run into is in torso and sleeve length. I don't want a super loose jacket but want to be able to throw my mid weight puffy under it on the chilly days. Large or XL?
