Amazing Hat!

By PGR

from Glacier Bay National Park, AK

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • packable
  • Warm
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • No head net

Best Uses

  • Canoeing
  • Cold Water Kayaking
  • Fishing
  • Rafting

Comments about Snoqualmie Sombrero!":

I lived in Southeast Alaska for two years and this hat was a lifesaver. I used it mostly for kayaking and rafting, with temps between 40F-70F. It got a bit hot to have on when the temp went up, but you can easily fold the ear-flaps into the upper part of the hat, which is a great feature. I've used it in the pouring rain and in constant day-long steady rains, and this hat kept my head 100% dry and warm. This hat is perfect for any cold water/rain expected adventures. If you're looking for something to use primarily in warmer weather, I would look at the other models because this hat will be too warm. The only improvement I can see is adding a bug head net that zips into the brim, or stitching in some of that bug repellent fabric that's out these days. Overall A+.

Pros

  • A WARM rain hat
  • Better than a jacket hood
  • Does not block sight
  • Does not block sound
  • Fits in jacket pocket
  • Good Uniform addition

Cons

  • Needs reflective stripe
  • Only black

Best Uses

  • Rainy Stormy days

Comments about Snoqualmie Sombrero!":

Used on duty several years. Folds up and fits in duty coat pocket. Does not block periferal vision or sound. Easily ties snugly, won't blow off in wind, especially with earflaps down. Fleece lining is warm!

  • Snoqualmie Sombrero!"

    Q:

Hello Outdoor Research! Let me start by saying that I love your products that I've used. As an undergraduate field biologist at Evergreen in Olympia, WA I'm out in the cold, wet elements on a daily basis, and your products have always kept me dry and happy for those long hours of field research.
I'd love to become an OR Lab Rat as I've already tested your gaiters, rain jackets and the Snoqualmie Sombrero rain hat and they've all been very satisfactory.
March, 2011 I am heading to Costa Rica to do field work, and a rain jacket will be too hot so I need a good rain hat and the Snoqualmie Sombrero, although great for the Pacific Northwest, will be a bit too warm for there. Your Coastal Sombrero would be perfect but it lacks the extra handy metal snaps on the side that the Snoqualmie Sombrero has. Have you considered making a Coastal Sombrero with metal snaps? I would love to be the first to try it and I can only imagine it would be the ultimate outdoor hat!
    Thanks for your time,
    Alex

The Seattle Sombrero is fantastic...check that one out if you need a rain hat that isn't as warm.
