Great Affordable Jacket

By Greg

from MA

Pros

  • Bicep To Hem Pit Zips
  • Features
  • price

Cons

  • Side Draft Flaps

Best Uses

  • Day hikes
  • Snowshoeing
  • Street Piece

I already own a super high end shell for snowboarding but it was expensive so I don't like to wear it anywhere that I might damage it. I needed to add an affordable but reliable rain/wind shell to the collection....Something more utilitarian that I can wear when schleping muddy bikes and kayaks, shove into a pack for day hikes and snowshoeing but also stylish enough to wear around town with jeans on a rainy day. The Panorama is the perfect affordable do-it-all piece. The hood has a semi-rigid visor with a tiny raiin gutter on the tip. There are also two drawstrings for the hood...the regular one tht snugs it to your face and a second one that pulls it back away from the face and snugs to to your head. The combination of the two allow you to leave just your face face exposed and still be able to turn your head without obscuring your vision. The other key feature are the (TorsoFlow) pit zips that go all the way down to the hem of the jacket. If you're too warm but still need light rain protection you can turn the jacket in to a cape like piece.

Pros: Price, Ventia membrane, taped sams, YKK zippers all around, front zipper has inner and outter draft flaps with Velcro at neck and hem. visor and drawstrings on hood, rain gutter, zip side pockets, side pocket is stuff sack.

Cons: So, it's not really a con considering the affordability and intended use of this jacket but the side draft flaps that cover the Torsoflow zips have only an outer draft flap with no Velcro or magnets to keep it sealed. A strong tailwind will blow the flaps open and let wind through the zips. I suspect that this is so the jacket won't cling closed when you're running the zips wide open in cape mode. Perhaps an inner draft flap or clever Velcro placement would help it seal when zipped but allow for it to hang freely when unzipped.

Denis - The Panorama Jacket does not have a stowable hood. If you are looking for a jacket with a stowable hood, the hood on the Revel Jacket zips into the collar of the jacket for quick stowing.
