Great mountaineering mitt

By Bobman

from Seattle, WA

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • Big gauntlet
  • Very tough material
  • Warm
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • Bit Sweaty Inside

Best Uses

  • Mountaineering

I bought these for climbing and skiing if the weather was too cold or wet for my non waterproof ski gloves. I don't love them for skiing (so far) because it has not been cold enough and I prefer finger dexterity for manipulating my poles, opening pit zips, etc.

They are great above 10,000 ft or on winter ascents--my hands perspire, though, and things get a little clammy if it's not cold enough outside. They are very warm and if I need the tough outer mitt (for handling an ice axe for example) but not as much warmth, I sub-in a lightweight fleece Oslo lilner from REI. Really love these. Might get an OR Flurry mitt to use as a liner for when I need no dexterity but max warmth (my wife and kids love their OR Flurry gloves).

Best Mitts I've Ever Owned

  • Removable Wrist Strap
  • Versatile
  • Warm

Cons

  • Mitt Dexterity
  • still looking

Best Uses

  • Backcountry Skiiing

  • Moving Snow With Tractor
  • Shoveling snow
  • Winter Mt Biking

Ecstatic they are making this Mitt again!!
I have a mild-moderate case of Raynaud's Syndrome-(a vasospastic disorder that is brought on by cold temperatures). This fact makes performing virtually any activity outside in the Fall/Winter/Early Spring, very uncomfortable to very painful without gloves or mitts.
It is so bad, it has made me consider retiring from skiing/climbing altogether.
I've owned 3 pair of these Mod Mitts and wore through my second pair about 3 years ago. (cat took out my front bike wheel, hands saved, mits sacrificed :) These mitts are the only pair of gloves that have been able to keep my hands warm while BC or Lift skiing, climbing, hiking, biking snow removal etc. OR apparently DQ'd these a couple of years ago, and the OR Alti mits are too bulky for anything but climbing, IMHO.
I've had these new mitts just a short time, but believe they will be every bit as great as previous versions, and probably better. The new mitt liner, although it is a glove rather than a mitt liner as previous, has a pocket for a hand warrner, which I still need to wear with any mitt or glove. The fact that it is on the inside and back of the hand, makes it actually useful and keeps the warmer from flayling around inside the glove.
Until I get step-in Tele gear, I am stuck reaching down to get into my bindings. While I often cannot do this with my mitts on, the liner is warm enough to do this with.
Skiing/Hiking/climbing in the NW wet conditions makes the taped
Gore-tex shell a must, and my hands definitely stay dry in these mitts. Bombproof product, Highly recommend it, even for someone with cold hand issues.

Toasty Hands Keep Me Happy

By Chris

from Lake Placid, NY

Pros

  • Combination Of Uses
  • Seals Gap Around Wrist
  • Toasty Hands

Cons

  • Roomy For Layering Option

Best Uses

  • base camp
  • BC Skiing
  • Resort Skiing

I use the Modular Mitts mostly for lift service on most days and bc skiing. I always carry them in my pack for when my hands are freezing and I need to warm them up. I love the seal around the wrist/jacket cuff which locks out snow and cinches tight. The liner is comfortable and toasty while the shell traps in heat and is easy to slide off and on. A grerat pair of mitts that work and are rugged against rock and bark.

  • Q:

How does this glove compare with the Alti Mitt? What are the main differences and which glove would you recommend for mountaineering in the lower 48?
Asked on 11/30/2012 by CHRIS from United States

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

The Alti Mitt features fixed insulation along with the removable liner and is rated to lower temperatures than the Baker Mitt. Each mitt will perform well under specific conditions. For lower temps and less exposure, the Baker Mitts offer more versatility.

  • Q:

How do I buy just the liner? Can I buy a warmer liner that will velcro in?
Asked on 11/8/2012 by AK Driver from Prudhoe Bay, AK

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

Additional liners for this product are not available to purchase separately. The PL 400 Mitts are the warmest liner type mitt that we produce in the line. In addition we do not make a liner with a Velcro attachment.

      A:

Yes, the Mt. Baker Modular Mitts are designed for storm protection in cold, damp climates at high altitudes. They are rated very generally down to -15F, though this temp will vary individually.
