great cold weather protection

Pros

  • Bomber
  • Quick dry
  • Warm
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • Clip-in Loop

Best Uses

  • Anything cold
  • ice climbing
  • Skiing

I've been using this glove all winter and it's proven to be my most trust worthy cold weather warrior. When the hands are giving you the screaming barfies, slip them into a set of the Luminary and feel the PAIN as you warm up! I approach, belay, rappel, ski etc. in these and after the initial break in period they pretty much became one with my hands. Gore keeps you dry and at the end of the day rip out the liners and the inside moisture dries out quickly. I haven't tried this, but was thinking if you buy them a size small and take out the liner you'd have a rad, waterproof shell (still cozy due to fleece bonded inside) suitable for hard ice leads on warmer but wet days.

Very Nice Glove

Pros

  • 2 piece
  • Tough

Cons

  • Long Gaunlets

Best Uses

  • Backcountry
  • Climbing
  • Skiing

I got these glove after considering multiple pairs of other gloves. Being a backcountry guide, I like a 2 piece glove as it allows me to pull them apart and dry them more easily. It also allow an increased flexibility of use by being able to use them without the liners when temps are milder or use a different liner if I choose. I wear a medium in many gloves but was afraid the medium was too restrictive so went for the large which isn't unusual for me in a glove of this type. They will benefit from a good breaking in while carrying a ski pole or ice ax and can tell the dexterity will improve after they are. I am applying a high quality leather conditioner to them to expedite this process. I believe they will work well.

  • Q:

What weight of fleece (100, 200...) is the liner glove and what weight of fleece is the lining in the shell?

    • Outdoor Research Employees

      A:

Luminary features a very light backing to the shell which would not constitute a weight rating. The liner is a hi pile fleece that would rate above our PL 400.
