In 2002, Optimer Performance Fibers introduced Dri-release® Wool as an alternative to their popular Dri-release® with cotton. This new product combined the best characteristics of wool: warmth, shape retention and natural fiber feel with the technical features of Dri-release®: light weight, easy care, FreshGuard® odor eliminator and a super fast water release rate.
Since its introduction, Dri-release® has been proven to have a water release rate four times faster than 100% cotton and even faster than 100% polyester. It was no surprise, then, when tests revealed that the Dri-release® Wool, too, dried four times faster than the 100% merino.
The real surprise, however, was the difference in warmth or CLO value between the two. Dri-release® Wool fabrics were found to be 29% warmer than merino wool even when tested in lighter weights. In standardized tests, a 4.9 oz./sq.yd. Dri-release® Wool fabric measured a CLO of .22, while an even heavier weight (5.8 oz.) of 100% merino wool had a CLO of only .17.
