Step out of the weather and enjoy a warm break. This day-use shelter gives you time to recover when precip and cold temps are slowing you down. It can be set up with your skis or with two trekking poles. The silnyl fabric sheds weather and conserves warmth while you re-energize. When it’s time to move on the LightHaven packs into a pocket-sized stuff sack.

BACKCOUNTRY SKI SET UP

PREP
Stomp a square platform in the snow. You may want to dig a pit in the center to put your feet in after the shelter is erect (fig. 1). Unpack the shelter and spread it out. The buckle at the base of the zipper should be closed.

STAKE
Use a ski pole to stake out the corner closest to the bottom of the door. Use another pole to stake out the opposing corner. Use your skis to stake out the two remaining corners. Plant the tails of the skis firmly in the snow. Be careful not to damage the webbing with the edges on your skis. The shelter should form a flat square with equal sides.

TENSION
The top of the LightHaven™ has two peaks. The two peaks in the top of the LightHaven™ should be aligned with the skis. Pull the guy lines from the peaks and wrap the Hypalon® ski straps around the tips. A double wrap will prevent the straps from slipping (fig. 2 ). Attach the clips to the cord. Adjust the cordlocks until the ridge between the two peaks is taught.

TREKKING POLE SET UP

PREP
Unpack the shelter and spread it out. The buckle at the base of the zipper should be closed. Stake out the four corners of the shelter. The shelter should form a flat square with equal sides.

CONSTRUCT
The top of the LightHaven™ has two peaks. Put the handle of a trekking pole in one peak and pull the loop over it to keep it in place (fig. 3). Plant the tip of the pole in the ground. Extend the pole until the sides of the shelter are taught. Repeat this process with the second peak, making sure the poles are evenly spaced.

ADJUST
Use the adjustable buckles on the stake loops to fine tune the shelter. Use bodyweight and the weight of packs and other equipment to hold the partial floor down and keep the shelter taught.

Notes:

  • Before You Head Out
Take a few minutes to become familiar with your LightHaven™ before you are depending on it in the outdoors. A short practice session at home will reduce set-up time significantly.
  • Select a Site
If you are using the LightHaven™ as a backcountry ski shelter avoid setting it up near avalanche prone slopes, snow laden trees, and cornices. If you are using it as a summer shelter choose an area safe from rocks and tree limbs that may fall in windy or rainy conditions.
  • Fire Warning
The LightHaven™ is made from a polyurethane and silicone-coated nylon that is flame retardant. Any source of heat or flame can cause the fabric to melt or burn. Never use a stove inside this shelter.
  • Seam Sealing
The weather-resistant properties of the LightHaven™ can be improved by sealing the seams with McNett™ products. SilNet™ is ideal for sealing the exterior, Seam Sure™ or Seam Grip® can be used to coat seams from the inside.
