Almost Perfect!

I have had this backpack for Fall, Winter, and Spring, and it is the perfect pack for these often wet months. I use this pack for field work when I often get caught out in the weather, and also need to put my pack down just about everywhere. It also makes a nice, dry seat in a pinch! This is a great, dry pack, and fits just about everything I need for a day's worth of work or adventuring. The one thing that makes this pack *almost* perfect is the front zipper. If the pack is not full then when you fold the top closed and buckle it, it creates a weird configuration for the pack fabric and the zipper becomes difficult to open and requires two hands and a little finagling. I also agree with another commenter here that some padding, or frame for the back would make this more comfortable. But alternatively, it is nice that it folds up really easily--and this feels like more of an intentional choice than a flaw like with the zipper.

Very good light backpack but

I like this little pack "that could" very handy, very light and great for outing when you only need the essentials but, on the first day of use, the external mesh holding my water bottle got damaged when I inserted the bottle and the velcro holding my piolet broke in two. They are simply too thin and fragile to last and secure properly expensive tools like a piolet or ice axes that you would not want to loose! Everything else works fine but these need to be replaced and I would add an internal nylon sleeve for water bladder.

Excursion gear

Cannot wait to use it in my winter camping trip next week. Will be perfect for my snowshoeing excursion

Awesome, lightweight, and versatile pack.

Love this pack! Great for snow shoeing day trips. Carry's everything I need and the light weight lessens fatigue.

Perfect summit dry bag!

I used this pack to summit Mt Whitney. It was the perfect size to hold all the essentials, plus extra gear, including ice axe and poles. Durable and built to stand up to moderate abuse.

This pack is awesome!

This product's greatest asset in my opinion is its weight. This pack ways virtually nothing. I use it most often for snow shoeing. I am able to utilize the strap loops in combination with pack bungees and strap my snow shoes to them until I reach the area I need to utilize them. The dry pack feature is perfect for the snowy/wet climate.

This is the perfect pack

I *love* this pack. I initially purchased the version without side pockets, but when this one came back in stock, I exchanged and am much happier with this one. The side pockets hold two nalgenes comfortably even when the pack is full. The compression straps are great for smaller loads, and I like the versatility of being able to strap the hip belt to the top closure for extra compression. I haven't noticed any issues with versatility yet. I've taken this pack for two weeks of rainy hiking in New Zealand and two full days of skiing (including many somersaulting falls – not really my sport...), and it's held up great so far. My only complaint: I wish there was one more compartment divider inside the main pack. The outer pocket is awesome (easily holds my Kindle + tons of extra stuff), but a little more built-in organization would be appreciated. Overall, though, an awesome pack that I don't expect to replace for years to come.

Great for bike commuting in the PNW!

I needed a better waterproof pack for bike commuting to work in the northwest winter wet. This pack is PERFECT. It fits my enormous laptop, my lunch, a coffee mug and waterbottle, and any spare clothes and rain gear, etc. The hip belt is perfect for carrying a heavier load. The shoulder straps can be a bit tight on the neck when the load is heavier, but the hip belt mitigates the issue with no trouble.

Almost the Best

Very good light and multi-functional day pay. It could be the best day pack with a back frame or padded back panel. However since it doesn't a back panel, I can put it inside my big back pack. It doesn't take much room.

Rugged yet light!

This is a great pack for wet conditions. I've used it for everything from multi pitch ice climbing to an extended sea kayaking trip and it's great to know that the contents will stay dry. There's also plenty of attachment points on the outside to attach things that don't matter if they get wet. Perfect size for an airline overhead bin, fits easily. Welded seams this pack does not have. Ship to shore on a zodiac. Would it be recommended to get a hiking pack with the welded seams? Kayaking in Alaska and the hiking in the rain I am wondering about this feature? 14 day adventure and the cruise line recommends one pack that folks side the out side pocket leaked ( made by OR )

Hi SMLR27, The front zippered compartment is water-resistant on both packs due to the zipper. The main roll top compartment is water-proof on both packs. The Dry Summit Pack HD would work as long as the pack was not submersed in water or if the pack was not exposed to water for extended periods of time (e.g. in a puddle of water). Think of it as a dry bag. The Dry Payload Pack has welded seams, it's also not submersible, however, it's more waterproof due to the materials and seams. Thanks for contacting OR, Paul

can it use in watersports, like kayaking

Hi Danny, The bag is not submersible so it might not be ideal for kayaking. Thanks for contacting OR! Paul

Is this pack really waterproof? If I flip over in canoe will the contents still be dry? Also how does it fit taller guys?

Hi Nathan, the pack is indeed waterproof and full seam-taped. The rolltop closure will help keep water from entering from the top (roll at least 3 times before locking the buckle). The pack is adjustable and should accommodate to fit taller people. Thanks for contacting OR!

Hi, I'd like to know if the Dry Summit Pack HD is fully waterproof, even to immersion. Thanx for your answer. Regards.

As long as your roll the top flap at least three times before you secure it, the Dry Summit Pack HD is submersible for brief periods of time.
