The Road from Karakol Trailer

Author: Outdoor Research

June 07, 2013

In 2011, Outdoor Research athlete Kyle Dempster, winner of two Piolets d’Or and one of the world’s most accomplished high-alpine climbers, decided to take off on a different adventure: He loaded up a used mountain bike and a BOB trailer, flew to Kyrgyzstan, and with a couple mostly-accurate maps, he planned to pedal abandoned Soviet roads and explore some mostly-unexplored mountain ranges. He took along a camera to record footage of his trip.

Kyle spent almost two months pedaling and pushing his bike more than 1200 km on roads of variable states of neglect, wading through wild rivers, dealing with corrupt military checkpoint staff, and soloing a handful of unclimbed alpine rock and mixed routes. He recorded the journey, his camera his only partner, friend, and sometimes the only receiving end of his conversations for days at a time. “That camera, in a way, became like Wilson,” Kyle says, referring to Tom Hanks’ companion volleyball in the film Cast Away.

In 2013, Kyle’s self-shot footage of his journey in Kyrgyzstan made it to the desk of filmmakers Fitz Cahall and Austin Siadak, who turned it into the 25-minute “The Road From Karakol,” which debuted at the 5Point Film Festival and took home the Best In Fest award. See the trailer for this incredible film here, and come back on Tuesday, June 25th when the complete film will be released.
