Up Close: Climber And City Councilor Dawn Glanc

Author: Outdoor Research

April 07, 2017

It was in South Dakota where Dawn Glanc—pronounced glance—first discovered climbing. Studying outdoor education at Black Hills State University, she got into rock and ice climbing, and hasn't let it go since. Now an AMGA rock and alpine guide, she co-owns Chicks Climbing & Skiing, ice climbs competitivesly (often snagging first place) and serves as a city councilor in Ouray, Colo. But don't let her political side fool you—she doesn't take herself too seriously. (Can you tell from her photos?) We're psyched to welcome Dawn to the Outdoor Research team—and wanted to get to know her better—so we caught up with her to get more of her story.

What are you focusing on this season?
Running women's rock and ice climbing programs is my main focus. This is my year-round focus. In the winter I try to mix climb and work on my own projects when I can. Every winter we go to Iceland, where I'm always reminded of how awesome Ice climbing can be. My summer focus is rock climbing and hiking high alpine trails. I'm also working to produce Mixtress, a film about the evolution of mixed climbing.

What's one dream trip you haven't done yet that you'd love to get on the books?

I'd love to ice climb on the bird cliffs in Iceland with my husband and then ski afterwards with a posse. Another dream trip is to explore Morocco.
