After 8,000 miles and 457 days spent in the woods, Chris dePolo still doesn’t have a good answer for the inevitable question “What inspired you to start hiking?”

Normally he blames his Grandma. Even before he could walk, she would put him on her back in a baby carrier and take him on walks up a trail behind her house. Take it or leave it, it’s the best answer he has. In the last four years he’s became one of around 300 people in the world to hike the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail.

He could go on for hours and hours about the things he’s learned, but more than anything—and especially after my last trip – he’s just happy to still be alive. For the time being, he’s settled down in Frederick, MD, while he plans for his next adventure, and he’s enjoying overdosing on coffee on a regular basis, something that is hard to do on the trail.

Next up is either going to be a float down the Yukon River for 1,800 miles or a trek in New Zealand down the Te Araroa. Only time will tell…
