Outdoor Research Ski Ambassador, Jessica BakerOutdoor Research Ski Ambassador, Jessica Baker

Jessica Baker is known for her smooth, fluid style in steep terrain and intrepid exploration on skis—the result of a lifelong love for skiing, passed down through multiple generations of her family. Raised on a small farm in the panhandle of Idaho among the glacially carved valleys of the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains, she began ski racing at age 9 and went on to become competitive in the Junior Olympics, FIS, and Nor-Am circuits. Jessica went on to ski race for Bates college NCAA Division 1 ski team, graduating with a BS in Geology and a thesis in climate record before moving to Wyoming’s Tetons. With mentorship from the likes of Doug Coombs and many more, Jessica’s ski career took the front stage as she went on to compete in the World Tour Freeskiing Circuit, and ultimately into bigger technical mountains. As a pro skier, mountain guide, and former Freeskiing World Champion, she has also tagged first ski descents around the globe.

In an effort to bring more women into the sport, Jessica founded Ski Divas women’s ski camps. And when she isn’t skiing, you’ll likely find her teaching her two young daughters to appreciate the splendors of the planet, how their own food—or snuggling in with a good book together. Jessica lives with her husband (a fellow mountain guide) and children in Jackson, Wyoming.

Passion Project

Jessica founded Ski Divas, women’s ski camps worldwide in 2007 to help bring more women into the primarily male-dominated sport and help them feel confident in their own skills and decision making. She runs programs all over the world, with opportunities for intermediate up to expert skiers. She also runs scholarship programs to help participants join from all income brackets and backgrounds. Jessica also works closely with adaptive athletes and Teton Adaptive Sports, including guiding Nancy Stevens, the first blind woman to climb the Grand Teton.

Jessica’s background in geology, hydrology, and climate studies have given her a unique perspective as an athlete to explore and document remote environments that are particularly impacted by climate change and environmental stressors. Jessica works with university professors, several non-profits, and a host of grassroots efforts to bring about awareness and help further research toward a host of environmental issues.

Along with raising her daughters to respect and care for the environment, Jessica has made it a priority to help people connect to nature and their outdoor environments.
