Best Waterproof Jacket (Review by Tony)
Quality

I have a few waterproof jackets and this is the best one I have yet to own. The AscentShell that OR uses is, IMO, better than Goretex. I have been in some intense downpours in the Tennessee Mountains and I stayed completely dry while hiking. If there is even a chance of wet weather, I bring this jacket with me wherever I go. It packs very well and is very easy to clean. I'm not too big of a fan of not having waist pockets, but the fact of the matter is this is a rain jacket so I can deal without having that. I will say that the sizing is a little on the smaller side so if you wear a large normally, by the extra large. I wear a medium and I bought a large and that gave me plenty of room without making it seem like it was too big. I shopped around a lot as I had lost 40 pounds and I did not want to spend money on something that I wasn't going to like. This jacket is versatile and will work both in the woods and that work. The infinite guarantee by Outdoor Research also makes me smile whenever I put it on. These guys and gals stand behind their gear and I am proud to wear something that is so Technical and yet very simple.

Top tier outer shell (Review by Velak)
Quality

Im writing this review after using this jacket at least 4-5 times a week for the last couple of months since I got it.

Positives:
1. AscentShell is really top notch, the material doesn't feel like a plastic bag, but it also doesnt feel too stiff, OR really hit the sweet spot where it feels amazing.
2. Its not too noisy, as I said, the material is top notch.
3. The hoodie cinches down to hug your head so the wind doesn't blow it back; it feels secure, but it doesn't feel constricted.

Negatives:

1. One thing I really dislike about this jacket is that once you tighten the hoodie around your head in order to secure it and cinch down all the drawcord hems when its raining, the neck part, right where the front zipper ends bulges out, so you have to tilt your head forward in order for rain not to get inside the jacket. It really needs another drawcord at the back of the neck in order to bring that part towards your chin so water doesn't get in there.

2. The main zipper feels "cheap" compared to the rest of the jacket. It doesn't flow freely, and it gets stuck sometimes. Also, in the first month 2 of the zipper teeth went MIA; however, overall the zipper still works properly.

Neutral:

1. It really is a tight fit, some people will like it, some people wont, you might want to consider going a size up if you have a beer belly like me, I didn't so there is only so much I can layer underneath before it gets too constricted. I regularly just wear a shirt, a down jacket and the Realm jacket and I do fine (I live in the Bay Area) but some of you in colder places might want to think about it twice.

Conclusion:

All in all, it is probably the best shell I have owned, the material is amazing, and for what it offers I think it really competes against higher priced jackets.

Excellent (Review by gohoos09)

Super light, waterproof, and uber breathable. It almost feels like a soft shell while you're wearing it. Have been wearing it for ice climbing and have never overheated. Not sure why you would get anything else.

Always in my pack (Review by Mike)
Quality

This jacket hits every criteria I had, and then some. It's light, packable, waterproof, breathable, blocks wind, and doesn't feel like a trash bag. So far I've used it on countless day hikes in the PNW rainy season and have zero complaints. I plan on keeping it stashed in my pack even as the weather dries up to prevent spontaneous storms above treeline from getting the upper hand this summer.

Great alpine and active rain jacket (Review by Joseph)
Quality

I was worried about this jacket at first (I had never heard of AscentShell before), but found it to be perfect. It is light, surprisingly breathable, but waterproof. I spent a week of rainy weather in the Pickets with it, and it kept me comfortable the whole time. I've been using it ice climbing this winter, and it works perfectly there as well. Much more cost effective than the Gore Tex brand name, but super effective. Highly recommend.

Love it (Review by g)

Things I like:
1. Material. It blocks wind. I really does. I haven't tested it in the rain yet.
2. Pockets are actually in a great spot. I thought they would be weird, but they actually work great. One is slightly bigger than the other and I was able to jam a full gallon zip lock of GORP in there with room to spare. They are obviously there to accommodate the harness, and for that they work great.
3. Cuffs work great and the velcro holds.
4. It packs down to less than a size of a standard Nalgene.

Things that could be better:
1. Pit zips. I know this is breathable, but I like having zips.
2. It almost packs down too small. I mean, when it's time to pack it back into it's pocket, I found myself walking down the trail and trying to pack the jacket back in it's pocket for 10-15 minutes. Not a huge deal, but if that pocket was 0.5 cubic inches bigger, the time packing would be cut by 75% without increasing the bulk of the packed jacket by a significant amount.

Great jacket. (Review by Aaron)

I wore this for the first time on a 80* day when it was pouring and humid. It kept me dry and did not stick to my skin. My only complaint is that is does not have side pockets. It has the chest pockets which are great but when I went to throw my keys in my pocket I didn't have one...

ultralight, waterproof & breathable (Review by Stryder)
Quality

It's rare that I write reviews but when I do, it is because the product performed beyond my expectations. I've taken this jacket on kayaking trips, backpacking trips and motorcycle trips and it has performed flawlessly. Lots of water on it from kayaking, stayed dry. Been in downpour, stayed dry. Rode with this jacket motorcycling to test how it blocks the wind. Could hardly feel it! It breaths really good, completely waterproof, and the materials is soft to your skin. I had a hard time debating between Gore-Tex or this ascend shell, but this breaths much better than Gore-Tex and just as waterproof. I hate baggy jackets. I'm a athletic build. This jacket has a athletic build. We were an instant match. Trim fit, yep. Ladies love it and so should you!

Performs as promised! (Review by SierraSaid)
Quality

Got this jacket about two weeks ago and with the two uses that I got out of it, it's already proven to be an amazingly versatile jacket. Climbed Mount Hood with this two weeks ago in 25-30 mph winds and it performed beautifully. Also used this past weekend up in Alpental where it rained all day and this thing kept me dry and comfortable inside. It's incredibly breathable, so you don't get that wet feeling inside the jacket even when you're sweating through your base layer. It is a more trim fit. I normally wear 16 34/35 dress shirt and I got a large so I could wear over my puffy or other layers. Highly recommended.

Great Fit and love the feel of this (Review by Bogey)
Quality

have a lot of jackets from OR and I'd have to say I really love what they've done here. Totally rainproof, a great windbreaker, and the feel of the material is outstanding. I cannot stand the feel of a jacket that rubs against my neck/face but this material does not bother me. My job requires me to be in the elements during the day and this will be a keeper for awhile. The fit is not that tight and fits me perfect. I'm a 44 chest and wear a 16 1/2, 34/35 dress shirt.
