RATING AND REVIEWS

Excellent gear

5

Used this jacket while snowshoeing in -10°c weather and took it off after about 5 minutes. It is incredibly warm. Put it back on while we had stopped by a lake with winds at about 20km/h and didn't notice it at all. For the most part I wore a shell over top of it but when it was exposed to the snow it was very water repellant. A great piece of gear for anyone that wants to do winter adventures.

The warm belay jacket that handles a cold winter

5

The Alpine Hooded Jacket is a large belay jacket that can be easily packed away in your climbing pack. A jacket filled with 800-fill down expertly baffled to distribute the feathers to the places they are most needed. Outdoor Research advertises this jacket to be suited for use on 6000-meter peaks, so that is the baseline that I used to review. On a 6,000 meter peak like Denali, Orizaba, or Aconcagua, you'll find frigid conditions on the glacier, with howling winds, and cold sleepless nights. I tried to best replicate those conditions in my home of Vail, Colorado. Immediately I notice the small features that tailor this jacket for the alpine climber. A helmet compatible hood, large pockets accessible while wearing a harness, a front zipper that can be unzipped from the bottom to keep you warm while you tie in or give a belay, and a stretchiness that allows you to reach your arms above your head with ease. The Pertex Fabric wicked away drops of water falling off the curtains of ice dangling above me. While keeping a weight of 19 ounces, the jacket is baffled in a way that down stays where it needs to be and makes the most use of what is available.

Top of the Mountain Winter Warmth!!

5

I love puffy coats and they always seem so crunchy/noisy. This is the quietest, warmest, softest most functional puffy I have ever had. The Pertex is weather resistant and it's incredibly soft to the touch. I feel so cozy when I put it on! There are tons of pockets and the handwarmer pockets are lined with fleece where the back of your hands are, again cozy! The hood adjustment is great for increasing your peripheral vision. I don't know if there is a better value out there for a jacket in this category.

Bomb Shelter Parka

I just received this parka and used it last weekend for a backcountry snowshoe trip with temps in the mid-20s. This parka was more than I needed for the conditions, but my rest breaks were cozy and warm wearing this parka. 19oz and packs small - it's a lot of warmth for the packed size and weight.

Bought for backcountry skiing in northern Montana, Glacier park area, not enough snow for skiing yet but have done a few cold weather and wind tests and initial impressions are good.

Extremely warm, roomy fit

5

This jacket is great and as expected, it is extremely warm. So far I've only been able to test it walking the dog in single digit temperatures, but with no other layers it performed extremely well. It's not too big, but there is enough room to fit over your other layers, as intended/described.

I had my eye on this jacket as soon as I saw it but didnt pull the trigger until some reviews came in. I have owned puffies forever but never something you could call a "belay parka". Seven five star reviews convinced me to give this one a try. In one sentence: this is the kid you want on your team. It is sooooo warm. All of the features combine to make a coat built for the mountains, mesh glove pockets, a baffle for the zipper, two way sliders, low coverage for your rump, plenty of room for layers, it is all there. This is one of those pieces that OR nailed. I will be using it all winter ski touring, snow camping and working in the mountains as a patroller in the PNW.

Great purchase

Great belay jacket for those cold ones. Awesome to wear around camp. Used as a summit jacket. Enough room to layer up without the feel of being way too big

Discussions

What is the total fill weight of this jacket? Also, is the down hydrophobic?

Hank

The fill weight is 182 grams of 800 down, the down is not hydrophobic, but you can add that in with a nikwax product if needed!

Q&A_Admi

What is the fill weight of the jacket(if that's the right way to ask it). I know it's 800 fill power down, but I'm curious how much down is in the jacket. This seems like a killer jacket at a good price. I'm looking to compare against similar parkas that advertise this info. Thanks

Mike
