Alpinists search for objectives that require all their skills, and for them, we built a jacket to match that ethos: If you want to make the best thing possible, you have to use the best ingredients. The Alpenice combines three technologies in an ultralight package for alpine pursuits: Ascent- Shell on the sleeves and shoulders, Polartec Alpha insulation, and Pertex Microlight fabric for breathability on the torso.

RATING AND REVIEWS

Excellent, comfortable, versatile

5

Used in moderate to chilly temperature camping and variable conditions hiking. Excellent temperature regulations- used all the way from 35-65 degress comfortably. Also sheilded mist and light rain well. Not super packable, but comfortable and versatile enough that I imagine it will be an every day piece through the northwest fall and winter.

Great jacket

Wore this hiking around glaciers. Jacket held up well against the weird weather. Kept the wind and water at bay. Bought a large to fit over layers. 5'11 180 pounds and fits perfectly for the purpose.

I love this jacket

I got this jacket about a week ago and I've worn it every day since. It's warm but not bulky and the polartech alpha insulation is very comfortable. It's comfy like a fleece but much more versatile, wind and weather resistant. I have an OR ascent shell already and am fond of it, so I was excited to see it being used on the most weather exposed parts of this jacket. OR's hoods are things of beauty and I was able to cinch this thing down pretty closely in windy weather and it stayed on, despite it being fairly roomy, if you needed to wear a helmet. The sizing is right for me and allows me to get a few layers on underneath. I first bought an ascendant jacket in my usual OR size (Large) and it was too tight. I returned it for an uberlayer XL since it was one inch less in the chest than an ascendant (XL), and it was too big. I then returned it for this piece in large and it fits me perfectly. I find this jacket to be more versatile given it still has the polartech alpha insulation but more weather resistance. The truly frigid winter temps of Pennsylvania were gone before I got this jacket but I can already see myself wearing it more often than any of my other winter jackets. I"m happy with this piece. Thanks OR

Easy to use

I generally really like this jacket as a warm up piece before and after Nordic skiing. I bought a large based on previous reviews and am glad I didn't purchase a medium. The large fits nicely over my active clothes. The jacket was folded strangely when it was packed and the result was a serious crease in the hood brim. I thought it would work itself out with use. I have tried to bend the crease out to no avail. Sadly, the crease has not gone away and the hood is nearly useless because the brim sags into one eye. I regret that I did not return it for exchange

Versatile

I bought a black Alpenice a few weeks ago and have used it quite a bit as a before and after Nordic skiing warmup jacket. In general I am very pleased with it except that when it was packaged, a crease was pressed into the hoop visor. I figured it would ease out with use but it hasn't. I have tried to work it out but I fear the crease is permenently set. The crease makes the hood almost unusable because it collapses over one eye. I regret that I didn't return it for exchange. I usually wear a Medium but after reading several reviews I decided to order a Large and I'm glad I did. It is a bit too roomy but a Medium would have been uncomfortably small in the chest.

Interesting addition to the quiver...

A superbly built jacket, as expected from OR, with small details like the waist cinch toggle being behind the hip rather than at the hip where a harness or pack belt will dig into you. As usual, sizing up for an outer layer like this is helpful (XL in my case). The unknown is how well the waterproof upper pieces will breathe. I'm expecting this to be a 'last resort' jacket in cold and windy conditions, in which case it should work well - but more field testing needed. Nothing like new gear to provide excuses to get outside more...

More of a under layer

I bought this as my main winter jacket for skiing, and ski touring. It fits small, and feels light duty.

Overall,I thought it to be way too much money for a basic active light winter jacket/later. The hood is huge as well, but does have a cinch cord.

Love this jacket

This jacket is perfect for the Pacific Northwest winters where it is rainy, but not overly cold. I have an OR 'winter' jacket that is too warm and puffy around here, but this one is perfect.

Possibly the Best jacket ever...with a Poorly design hood

4

Jacket is one of my all time favorites. It fits well and looks great. The versatility is amazing (as is the cozy/warm feeling. I even prefer it over my puffy for quick warmth). It may have been my all time favorite jacket...until it started to rain/snow and I had to use the hood. Considering how great the jacket is and its versatility (with the hybrid nature...waterproof on the upper torso and shoulders while stretchy/breathable everywhere else), it is a shame that the hood could be listed as "poor". The jacket very warm...but regulates heat amazingly well. It is even fairly compressible. In my opinion, the Alpenice is better in almost every way than the Uberlayer (which I also own) except the hood. It would be cool if it the left hand pocket were modified slightly to be just a little bit larger and had a double sided zipper so the jacket could be compressed in to it's own pocket. The jacket is so good (and I enjoy wearing it so much) that I will keep it and deal with the hood. If the hood were better...this may have been the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time)!

Discussions

Hello, I was wondering if this hooded jacket would be warmer than the Uberlayer? thank you

Patrick

Hi Patrick, The AlpenIce Hooded Jacket will be slightly more warmer than the Uberlayer and more weather-resistant. Thanks for contacting OR,

Paul

Does this jacket have pit zips?

Jay

Hi Jay, This jacket does not feature any pit zips. The AlpenIce Hooded Jacket is part of the Active Insulation series, which provides insulation when you need it, and it's designed to breathe and wick away moisture. Thanks for contacting OR, Paul
