RATING AND REVIEWS

My favorite mid-weight insulating layer

5

This is by far my favorite insulating layer I've ever used. It provides warmth when your static, and the side panels allow heat to dump when the weather is below freezing and you need to move. Since owning this jacket, I've worn other comparable items from other companies, and I get sweaty and muggy in them. I keep returning to this piece, as I don't have to constantly adjust the zipper to dump heat. Even though I knock it for not having the best weather protection, it should be noted that this isn't what this is for. The side panels allow wind to cut right through, so if it's a windy, cold morning for a summit bid, it's best to throw on some sort of shell. It also isn't the toughest material for the shell, and I have had a few gashes on it from bushwhacking. I've just thrown on a few Gear Aid patches and it is just fine. It has held up well to alpine ascents on rough granite, however, and does a decent job of repelling light rain. Overall, this has been my favorite mid layer I've ever worn. I hope it comes back, as the new Refuge is a bit heavy for my liking.

The Perfect layer for Ice climbing and alpine adventures.

This layer is perfect for hiking to the routes in winter and as an extra layer in summer. It's not too bulky and has much higher breathability than any puffy. Although not as warm as a puffy. Carry the puffy on the back of your harness for when it's really cold. It is reasonably waterproof, but not so for complete rain showers, great for when the ice is dripping on you or light snow falling whilst hiking or belaying etc. I like using it for an active mid layer as I can unzip all the way if I'm too hot. It's pretty windproof but has enough breathability to allow evaporation of sweat which is what you what, if you are looking at this jacket. I would buy this again.

I think I found the perfect midlayer

As a member of a SAR group you are always looking for the perfect midlayer. You spend a lot of time waiting then some serious hiking. The Cathode is easy to layer over and under. The helmet compatibility is great. Another nice thing is it takes a small amount of space in your pack and maintains its warmth in wet weather

Fully functional

This was replacement for original where zipper and pockets failed. I love this piece for its overall function as it's a perfect mid layer for 3 season adventures. It's not bulky and I love the hood option as it adds about 5 degrees to the comfort zone. Windresistant, ok in a light drizzle but would prefer a shell if ongoing precipitation .

Perfect for cool fall days and moderate winter temperatures. Makes for a nice mid layer too when you need a little extra insulation.

A perfect jacket for cool, windy fall weather

5

Was looking for something to replace my old OR light weight jacket and this is perfect. I was also looking for a windproof insulated jacket to wear underneath my mesh motorcycle jacket, and again, perfect. This jacket is warmer and more windproof than my synthetic hoody but not as warm or bulky as my 100gm quilted jacket. The Cathode is light enough to wear heading out just as the afternoon starts cooling off and warm enough when you're coming home after dark. It has an athletic fit that is a little snug across my upper chest (40") in med but I hardly notice it under normal use. I am so pleased that I found exactly what I was looking for and that it performs so well.

Amazing Jacket

Great puffy for the field. Identical quality and performance to similar more expensive jackets. Ideal for layering given the slim fit design (I found measurements for sizing was very accurate).

Question about the mens Cathode Hooded jacket that has won OR some gear awards. Ad says it is a trim fit so I'm thinking it's like the Ferrosi soft shell jacket. That was a little tight through the chest on me, but the sleeve length was right. I do have one of your rain jackets in a Large. If I go up to an XL in the Cathode will I gain an inch in sleeve length ? There are not any sleeve lengths listed in your sizing chart. My chest measurement is 44-45.." Open to suggestions.

William

Hi William, A size Large Cathode has a Chest measurement of 46" and a Sleeve Length (SL) of 36". In a size XL, the Cathode has a Chest of 49" and a SL of 37". The Ferrosi Jacket in a size Large has a Chest of 46 1/2" and a SL of 35 1/2", while a size XL has a Chest of 49 1/2" and a SL of 36 1/2. If the size Large in the Ferrosi was a little tight, I'd go with the size XL in the Cathode. Thanks for contacting OR!

what is the temperature rating for the cathode hooded jacket? I will be trekking in zero to -5 degree F. Will this jacket suffice if I have a base layer + fleece under it?

Jai

We don't assign temperature ratings to our jackets because it's so subjective, but unless you're being extremely active, I think you may want something a little warmer.I would wear the Cathode in temps down to the low teens.
