RATING AND REVIEWS

Great Jacket, weird sizing

4

This coat has a real slim fit, I generally get a medium with most OR products but this one is slimmer and so if you plan on wearing anything substantial underneath this shell (micropuff, another jacket) forget about it. I ended up returning the medium and getting a large, which is way too long in the arms and around the waist.... still I will keep this jacket because its light, breathable, and feels rather durable.

Used this thing for several different things now, from working outside to standing in the rain and it has been great.

Spot on shell

The most breathable shell I've ever owned. Fits a tall, lean-like man well, and the mechanical stretch keeps me covered when I'm using my arms, which is often. Held up well in wet snow.

GREAT ice climbing jacket

5

This jacket is amazing for what I bought it for which was ice and mixed climbing. I live in the northeast and used this jacket for climbing on a nearly daily basis. The features of this jacket that I really feel make it excel as an ice jacket are listed below: Pros: -Baffled armpits (allows a person to swing an axe high overhead without the jacket shortening at the wrists or harness-line - Perfect length - runs a bit lower than the hip line which keeps the jacket situated perfectly below the harness. It does not ride up above the harness allowing cold air in. - Lightweight and breathable - Unlike other brands, it is very lightweight (almost seems flimsy) but holds up to abrasion when tackling a mixed rock and ice pitch. - A bit form fitting in the torso - It is perfect if you carry a shoulder sling to hold your draws or screws and does not bunch up or get in the way when trying to take gear off of a shoulder sling. - Pockets -pockets are higher up so access is easy with a harness on Cons - Price: expensive but if you can get it on sale, it is worth it. If I lost this jacket, I would not want any other jacket for climbing ice and I would pay the full price if needed. I highly recommend it.

Light and great upgrade for me.

5

Bought this as an upgrade to my 15 year old heavy North Face Gortex Shell. What a difference. About a 1/4 of the weight, packs much smaller, and just as waterproof. Wore it recently through a couple of local snow storms to test it out and shed the moisture without a problem. Plan on having this along for a few Cascade summits later this year. Bought mine in the Large size because I wanted to layer underneath. Baselayer, fleece, light puffy under. I am 5'11" and 175. All the cuff and hood adjustments make it a fine wear without the layers too. Time will tell on durability.

Outstanding Lightweight Wind/Rain Shell

5

I used this for a February summit of Lassen Peak and came away extremely satisfied with its performance. I was skeptical at first about its breathability since it lacks pit-zips, but in actuality, I had no issues wearing this paired with a lightweight base layer and Ferossi hoody while moving. Temps ranged from 30s into the teens, max winds probably reached 40 knots and the jacket did its job. The simplicity of the design keeps weight and bulk down so it packs up small and light. The hood fits great over a climbing helmet while providing good neck protection while fully zipped. The fit is on the "athletic" side of things which I prefer (I'm 5ft 7in, 168lns). An Ascendant hoody fits perfectly underneath and I can get a down puffy sweater under as well but definitely no more. I don't see this as an issue since that combo is plenty warm enough for most uses and and a belay parka would easily fit over the Bolin if needed. All in all the Bolin is my new go-to shell for winter sports.

Perfect Go-To Outer Layer.

5

I love this thing. I did think it'd be a little heavier but I am glad it's not. The sizing is perfect as it fits with or without my small down layer underneath. With my down under it, it makes for an unstoppable team in late winer/early spring mountain stuff. Ice climbing and not worrying about getting wet is awesome. Backcountry skiing and not worrying about the Wyoming wind blasting through your outer layer is also awesome.

Great jacket

5

This is a good coat so far. It seems to breathe. I use this primarily for ice climbing in the northeast. It is my go to jacket for this activity and is a great lightweight shell. There is no liner. When it arrived, it was so small that I thought 'this is it?'. Now that I have field tested it on water ice on places such as Frankenstein willoughby and smuggs, I will be adding this to my alpine kit. I wish it wasn't so expensive but you get what you pay for with climbing gear. Another upside is the design. It is a bit snug in the chest and stomach area which is good for climbing. When you are reaching down to grab a screw or screamer off your harness, this jacket does not impede these movements which is essential when pushing limits on wi4 and up. Another couple points worth noting are that the jacket runs a little bit long which is great for when you are swinging your axes over your head. The jacket does not rise above your harness, which limits the amount of cold air to enter your core area. Another bonus is the baffles armpits. Again, when you swing your axes, you aren't limited by the shortness of the sleeves or poor design. As in the waist area, the arms do not slide up exposing your wrists. No, I was not paid to say these things. It is really just an awesome, lightweight, well designed ice climbing shell.

Good quality light weight jacket

5

I was very impressed by the weight and waterproofing of this jacket. It also is very windproof. The performance of the jacket so far has been great. I exchanged a GoreTex Pro jacket which was very heavy and not waterproof, so the Bolin Jacket is a big improvement for me. The performance is better and the jacket is lighter. I haven't tried it yet for high intensity activity but look forward to trying this Ascent shell fabric for ski touring. I am 5' 11" and 172 lbs with 40" chest, 33" waist. Normally I wear medium but I ordered this in Large and it fits fine. It seems to be a slimmer fit so I'd recommend getting the larger size.

Bolin jacket...does it have handwarmer pockets?? I don't see any in any photos. Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave, It has two zippered hand pockets. Thanks for contacting OR,

Paul

I just purchased the Bolin jacket and so far very happy but for one thing, I see it's a trim fit jacket and the large fits almost perfectly except it's very snug around my stomach. My question is would I be better off with and Extra Large jacket or does the jacket come in a Standard Large?

Clark

Hi Clark, The XL will help with the fit in the stomach (has a 3" bigger waist and sweep), however, the jacket overall will be larger as a result of increasing the size. Thanks for contacting OR,

Paul

Is this a hard shell or soft shell?

Matt

Hi Matt, This is a hard shell jacket. Thanks for contacting OR, Paul
