RATING AND REVIEWS

Much Too Short!

1

I ordered the Helium II shell because it's lightweight and waterproof. I ordered size XXL because I'm 6'4". The shell was much too short when I tried it on. Only 27" long! For size XXL?? Amazing fail!

Perfect for all occasions

I have two. The original and now this version. I always keep one in the car and perfect for hiking and travel. I usually wear a large but got an XL due to the fact that sometimes the snow turns wet and if I'm wearing my puffy (OR also) I like to use it as a shell. Have used it from North America, South America, Europe, trekking, biking, hiking, walking around town, in warm and cold weather. So far no complaints.

Great in the wind, but lousy in the rain

3

I have had the Helium II since the fall of 2018 and have taken it on several trips into the high sierra as well as our local mountains here in Los Angeles. Overall, the shell has been a welcome accessory to my winter gear. However, I was on a hike that involved several hours of rain on the approach to the summit where it was snowing. Due to weather our party turned around and headed back to the parking lot. It was a good thing too, because my jacket (and OR Bolin shell pants) were soaked through and would've surely made things uncomfortable, if not terminal had I needed to bivy on the mountain. This is basically a windbreaker and nothing more. A good shell should tolerate all-day moisture, otherwise you can't depend on it. I would not buy this again, but will likely use it as a wind shell on sunny winter days.

Super lightweight jacket

5

Great jacket for mtb. I keep in my fanny for those unexpected showers. Kind of like wearing a plastic bag (does not breathe at all), so can be very hot on the climb, but keeps me dry and sheds mud and packs down to the size of a beer can at a fraction of the weight.

This jacket is legit!

The bad: The hood pulls back a bit when cinched tight. This could be a problem if you're wearing a down hoodie and it's raining because the edges of the down hoodies hood could get wet. Also, the hood on this jacket sometimes gets pushed back in moderate to high winds. Also noteworthy is the length of the coat. If you pair this jacket with a down sweater from Patagonia, you'll likely notice that it is about an inch too short to completely cover the bottom. This could lead to the down sweater getting wet in a downpour. The jacket fits well over many other brands but were the Helium II about 1.5 inches longer this problem would be solved completely. That said, the Helium II is a great jacket. I pack and wear mine all over the place. It comes with me when I travel and on backcountry hikes. Paired with the Helium II pants, you'll have great ultralight rain protection and protection from the wind in colder climates. It's not a perfect jacket for the reasons I outlined above, but it's pretty close. I am very happy with this purchase.

Trail tested

I had my Helium II for my whole Appalachian Trail 2018 Thru hike. The one item I didn't switch out through my whole 2,200 mile trek. This is a quality jacket that kept me warm in my layering set up in the snow. It kept me dry in the freezing rain. This jacket saved me when there was cutting winds on the peaks. I loved it so much I bought a second because it's always nice to have a backup in your closet - just incase. I like black because when the sun is out, I think it dries quicker. I also really only wear it when it's cold or windy. This is because hiking in warm summer rain I don't find any jacket suitable in keeping you dry cause you'll always sweat. In cold conditions I think black with the sun will assist in keeping you warm- resulting in less calories burned to warm you.

Super Lightweight, Always In My Pack

5

It's so light I carry this jacket in my pack on every climb. It's lightweight insurance for those Rocky Mountain days that suddenly turn from sunny and 25C to gusting wind and rain. There is nothing better than pulling it out of the pack during squalls and keeping the elements at bay.

I am 5'7", 200lbs, 45" chest, 18" neck, 33" sleeve, 37" waist. Your product does not indicate sleeve length. I am thinking of XL. What would you suggest?

Rob

Hi Rob, If you plan on layering underneath the jacket a size XL may be best. The sleeve length of the jacket is 37.75", it is measured from the center back neck seam to the center of the cuff (straight measurement). Thanks for contacting OR,

Paul

Hey There, I have a Helium II, and love it! It seems that it is aging (to be expected given the use it gets) and the water does not quite roll off it the way it did when it was new. Do you recommend any sort of waterproofing spray, or wash treatment, to bring new life to my jacket? Thank you!

Kurt

Hi Kurt, Have you washed the item recently? Washing your waterproof gear can drastically improve its performance, as oil, dirt, and grime can actually clog the fabric's pores, causing the fabric to absorb moisture instead of repel moisture. Try washing your jacket with a tech wash (we recommend Nikwax Tech Wash) and following up with a double rinse and tumble dry on low. The heat of the dryer works to reactivate the fabric's DWR, increasing water repellency. You may also try Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In to revive the water repellent properties. If the problem persists then you may have a defective jacket, which we would be happy to replace. Please keep us updated and thanks for contacting OR! Paul

Have this jacket and love it- but the repellancy seems to be wearing off. What's the recommended waterproofing? (nikwax wash, revivex spray. Etc?)

Rachel

Hi Rachel, Washing your waterproof gear can drastically improve its performance, as oil, dirt, and grime can actually clog the fabric's pores, causing the fabric to absorb moisture instead of repel moisture. Try washing your jacket with a tech wash (Nikwax) and following up with a double rinse and tumble dry on low. The heat of the dryer works to reactivate the fabric's DWR, increasing water repellency. Nikwax also makes a great wash-in waterproofing for wet weather clothing called TX.Direct Wash-In. If the problem persists then you may have a defective jacket, which we would be happy to replace. Good morning, I was wondering if this jacket is pretty shinny or a mat colour? Thank you

Oct

The Pertex Shield Plus fabric we use in our Helium series is a bit reflective - definitely more "shiny" than "matte."

Jordan

How shinny is the coyote brown? Or is it more of a mat colour?

Oct

The fabric on all of our Helium jackets is a little bit reflective, regardless of the color.

Jordan

what is the length of the Helium II in size M? neck seam to hem i suppose.

Thomas

The Men's Helium II Jacket in size Medium has a center back length of 27.5".

Jordan

What is the best way to renew my helimum II jacket's water repellent as my jacket is no longer as water proof as it used to be..

Martin

Try washing your jacket with a gentle, non-residue-leaving detergent like Nikwax Tech Wash and follow up with an extra rinse cycle and tumble dry on medium. After you wash the jacket, you could also use an aftermarket DWR like Nikwax TX.Direct to revitalize the jacket's water repellent coating. Both of these steps should make your jacket noticeably more waterproof.
