This jacket is a great niche jacket if you aren't expecting a cheaper gore-tex pro type shell. I've used this as an emergency shell if the forecast looks clearish as it does a great job blocking wind and light to moderate precip. The one time I used it in heavier weather it did soak through after a few hours of strong rain, but that is to be exptected - I was still dry on the inside though. Quite honestly, it's best use for me is on vacations or theme park type trips since it packs down so small - more of a daily driver type shell.

The one knock everyone seems to have with this jacket is breathability. It doesn't breathe particularly well when it's warm or humid, but the pit zips help. It also isn't a particularly strong feeling material, so probably not great for expedition use,but again, it fills a niche with the packability and weight. I ran a late March northeast half-marathon in this jacket and a medium weight baselayer and it was perfect.

If you aren't expecting bomber protection and are looking for a solid wind/rain shell in situations where your life didn't depend on your gear, this is a fantastic jacket. I own two other gore-tex shells I take on serious climbs, but I have gotten much more use out of this shell. And it looks pretty good too...

I purchased this jacket fully knowing what I was getting into. As it is, the Helium HD is a great lightweight jacket. It made well, fits well, and does everything you'd expect it to. It's nothing special. However, I'd like to make a suggestion...

What I really want from OR is a Helium type jacket, with torso flow venting that stops just below the arm pits, a halo hood, chest and hand pockets, drawcord waist, adjustable cuffs with elastic, and molded (vislon type) zippers throughout.

Or... go out an make something even more awesome than the jacket I envision. But, just consider that some people want a jacket that's as light as possible, but doesn't skimp on features.

The Helium HD is close... But why ditch the elastic in the cuffs? Also... pit zips were included, but why not TorsoFlo? This is one of your best features and you could end them just below the armpits. No one ever opens them up further than that anyway. And get rid of all the coil zippers. They're crap... molded zips are the only way to go. I'd gladly take a 10 or 10.5 oz jacket with these features.

I want the jacket I want to be as light and as functional as possible. I hate having to choose between an awesome jacket that's heavy, and a compromised jacket that's light.

Comments about Men's Helium HD Jacket:

I'm 5'10 and 155lbs and I tried on both the small and medium sizes of this jacket and neither one fit well. The small had perfect sleeve lengths but was too short on the waist and a little too tight in the chest area. The medium was a good length around the waist but a little too baggy in the torso and sleeves were too long. I was really bummed because this jacket had awesome features and seemed like it would have made a great light weight backpacking jacket.

I always have this in my pack. Waterproof and wind proof. I had the helium ii but never wore it because I would feel clammy. With this I can unzip the pits and the problem is solved!

Still relatively new but first full rainy day and it performed flawlessly.
I am 5 ft 9 in and 200 lb and the Large fits me well. I wouldn't want it any shorter.

    I really like:

Comments about OR Men's Helium HD Jacket:

I have owned this jacket for a little over a year. I have been caught in rain, sleet, high winds and hail. It has performed very well each time. The only thing I would change is adding a strap to secure the hood.

Comments about OR Men's Helium HD Jacket:

Came in handy for getting caught in a rain storm in Boston. Jacket was great at keeping me dry. The fit of the jacket allows for a good range of motion and does not restrict movement. The ability to compact the jacket into itself allows one to keep it on them at all times. I have one to throw in a backpack just in case, as well as putting one in a Bug-out bag without taking up much space.

Comments about OR Men's Helium HD Jacket:

Just got my jacket size XL. Perfect fit for 6" 4" 230 pounds with tall torso. Packs down small in its own pocket. Spent a half hour in torrential downpour at amusement park. My wallet and phone were bone dry in pockets. Works perfect, great hood for visibility. Love it.

Comments about OR Men's Helium HD Jacket:

This is a terrific hiking jacket. It packs very small and is the most breathable of all of my waterproof jackets.

More velcro could be provided to allow for tighter sleeve cuffs.
