RATING AND REVIEWS

Almost Perfect

This jacket does exactly what I wanted it to do. It keeps me dry, blocks the wind, packs down small, and is so light I don't even remember that I have it. There is no excuse for not having a rain jacket when you own this. I put it in every bag I pack for anything ranging from my climbing bag, to backpack. I throw it in my car if I am not carrying a bag because it is; Just. That. Good. My one complaint, and it's a big one for me, is that there are no pockets. I wear this over my Refuge Hoodie when it starts to rain, and it blocks the pockets that I would normally keep my hands in, without replacing them. I understand that this is supposed to be more of a last case scenario type of jacket, but I don't go out if I know it's going to rain and therefore don't own a dedicated hard shell. I would like to have pockets so I don't have to keep my hands out in the rain, especially if its cold.

First time buying OR gear, haven't really worn this jacket much but their sizes run a little small. So if you normally wear a L expect to need an XL

The ultimate UL Backpacking rain layer!

Use this jacket for backpacking. I love how small this thing gets when tucked away in it's pocket...and the weight, is so light that you'll never know it's there until you need it.

Helium ll jacket

Just purchased an entire new OR kit, this jacket being part of it. Taking it all to Kodiak Island next week (10/19/18) for a 10 day goat hunt. Will do a much more thorough review when I return on all the new OR gear that I purchased. My first thoughts on this jacket, wearing on some local hikes, is that it's insanely packable and super light weight. Compressed down to take up virtually no room in the pack. If I have any concerns right now, it's how will it hold up under heavy pack(wear from shoulder straps), and how will it hold up while bushwhacking through the alders(it is super lightweight) Maybe it'll just be sunny the whole time?!?ha I've shopped around and did all the comparisons. Being in the industry I do have several companies I can pick from for the gear I choose to use. When it comes to mountain hunting, OR has it figured out! Can't wait to put this stuff to some real use.

This jacket rocks!

Just returned from a mulit-pitch route where I wore this jacket the entire time. The route involved many chimney sections and I was convinced that the back of this jacket was trashed. After finishing the route and inspecting the jacket, it was apparent that the Helium was no worse for wear. From the get go, I loved this jacket but had been concerned about its durability; that concern has now been put to rest. I would recommend this piece without hesitation to someone looking for a lightweight emergency piece to keep in the bottom of their pack 24/7.

I bought this for my boyfriend and he loves it!

My boyfriend loves this jacket. It's super compact and lightweight. Perfect for the alpine. His only complaint is he wishes it would zip into its own pocket instead of the bottom Velcro pocket. It's been great!

Great stow-away for unexpected storms

I keep this in my backpack for unexpected weather. Works great to block the wind and keeps you dry, even in heavy rains. Like the adjustable hood but hand pockets would be nice. Definitely recommend.

Very lightweight and compact

I love the light weight of the jacket, and it seems to breathe relatively well while still repelling light rain (haven't tested in heavy rain yet). My main complaint is with the fit: I'm a fairly large, muscular guy so I ordered the XXL size (the largest available). I was disappointed to discover that even with this usually cavernous size the jacket is still very tight across the chest and shoulders, and the sleeves are tight on my arms. There is no way that I'll be able to wear this jacket as a rain/wind barrier over a puffy or fleece jacket, thus relegating this otherwise excellent jacket to warm-weather use only. I'm happy to recommend the product others, but only if they're really skinny.

I am 5'7", 200lbs, 45" chest, 18" neck, 33" sleeve, 37" waist. Your product does not indicate sleeve length. I am thinking of XL. What would you suggest?

Rob

Hi Rob, If you plan on layering underneath the jacket a size XL may be best. The sleeve length of the jacket is 37.75", it is measured from the center back neck seam to the center of the cuff (straight measurement). Thanks for contacting OR,

Paul

Hey There, I have a Helium II, and love it! It seems that it is aging (to be expected given the use it gets) and the water does not quite roll off it the way it did when it was new. Do you recommend any sort of waterproofing spray, or wash treatment, to bring new life to my jacket? Thank you!

Kurt

Hi Kurt, Have you washed the item recently? Washing your waterproof gear can drastically improve its performance, as oil, dirt, and grime can actually clog the fabric's pores, causing the fabric to absorb moisture instead of repel moisture. Try washing your jacket with a tech wash (we recommend Nikwax Tech Wash) and following up with a double rinse and tumble dry on low. The heat of the dryer works to reactivate the fabric's DWR, increasing water repellency. You may also try Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In to revive the water repellent properties. If the problem persists then you may have a defective jacket, which we would be happy to replace. Please keep us updated and thanks for contacting OR! Paul

Have this jacket and love it- but the repellancy seems to be wearing off. What's the recommended waterproofing? (nikwax wash, revivex spray. Etc?)

Good morning, I was wondering if this jacket is pretty shinny or a mat colour? Thank you

Oct

The Pertex Shield Plus fabric we use in our Helium series is a bit reflective - definitely more "shiny" than "matte."

Jordan

How shinny is the coyote brown? Or is it more of a mat colour?

Oct

The fabric on all of our Helium jackets is a little bit reflective, regardless of the color.

Jordan

what is the length of the Helium II in size M? neck seam to hem i suppose.

Thomas

The Men's Helium II Jacket in size Medium has a center back length of 27.5".

Jordan

What is the best way to renew my helimum II jacket's water repellent as my jacket is no longer as water proof as it used to be..

Martin

Try washing your jacket with a gentle, non-residue-leaving detergent like Nikwax Tech Wash and follow up with an extra rinse cycle and tumble dry on medium. After you wash the jacket, you could also use an aftermarket DWR like Nikwax TX.Direct to revitalize the jacket's water repellent coating. Both of these steps should make your jacket noticeably more waterproof.
