RATING AND REVIEWS

Ice climbing pants!

4

I've been wearing them at work for a week straight in the cold 20-30's with just a Patagonia cap 1 thin lightweight baselayer and been plenty warm walking in camp and hiking. It's nice to be able to vent the pants and dump the heat on the way up. Nice softshell material on outside and nice very thin fleece grid lining on inside. The legs do run a tad bit longer than expected, but nothing terrible. I feel I run pretty normal leg inseam at 30/32 and these feel a tad bit longer, maybe a 34?

Comfortable and high performance value

4

Snagged these for a seasonal trip to ice climb in the San Juans of CO. The pants performed well out of the box. Fit was good through the legs and stayed warm with a single thin thermal layer underneath. I like the leg cuff zippers, side-leg vent zippers, and left leg back pocket which sits nicely below the leg loop of a harness. Only thing I found slightly frustrating was the waist fit as it felt slightly larger by comparison to the rest of the pant. I feel like having suspenders with these pants would help keep them from sagging slightly (pants are equipped with suspend loops).

Well constructed, but strange fit

I got these but haven't used them and will be returning do to the fit. I'm slim guy and still found them too tight in the thighs. I got a small, I would say the waist is true to size at 30", but you have to wear them around your belly button if you want the inseam to fit. I found that I couldn't move my legs enough to climb in them. They would be the perfect alpine/ice pant if they were baggier.

With some design changes these would be great winter pants.

These pants are so close to perfect. I never wore them in the field - the fit in the waist and hips/seat is odd and too large for the sizing. I bought a size Large, which usually fits me well with a ~34" waist, but the pants were just too baggy with a huge waist. I also didn't quite see how the instep lace would help; if you tighten the instep lace to keep the pant legs down you loosen the cinch around the boot and vice-versa. On the upside - the fabric and overall build of the pants feel great. Add a lace hook and eyelets for separate instep laces, and tweak the fit, and I think these pants would be perfect for all kinds of backcountry winter activities.

Iceline Versa Pants do the job

4

These pants do their intended job very well. They have a slim fit which keeps them out of harms way and your crampon points, especially on the inside of the lower leg. The cut/fit allows for a good movement even in in all of the situations i've encountered. They breathe well, but are also quite windproof. The waffle pattern on the inside does a good job of wicking moisture and insulating. Pockets are set in good locations. I initially thought the left, behind-the-leg pocket was going to be a write off. But as it turns out things like a phone or energy bars actually fit well there and are much less noticeable than items stored in the side pockets of most of my other pants.

Terrible fit- skin-tight legs and extra large waist

2

The legs are way too tight, so much that they bunch up and make it hard to bend my knees. They fit like skinny jeans. I'm trying these on right now with just boxers on and they're too tight, I can't imagine I could fit even a light base layer underneath, let alone thicker base layers I would want in very cold weather. Meanwhile the waist is too big, the sizing chart is NOT accurate. My waist measures exactly 32" (maybe 32.5"), and the size chart indicates that the size medium i ordered is 32.5" in the waist. There is at least an extra inch in the waist, probably more like 1.5" - 2" extra. It's like these were designed to fit slightly overweight hipsters with scrawny legs, not athletic climbers with trim waists and strong calf muscles.. Maybe I sound harsh but vanity sizing is really not cool, especially when the sizing chart is not accurate. And the tight legs makes no sense, especially for pants designed for ice climbing and mountaineering.. (PS- I ordered and returned the Wadi Rum pants, they have the same sizing issues). Sizing and fit aside, these seem like really nice pants. The construction seems solid, and there are a lot of thoughtful features. One thing that may not be clear from the description is that there is a thin microfleece grid lining throughout the pants, so they are very lightly insulated. These could also use more pockets, and I'd prefer the pockets were not made of mesh, but if it weren't for the terrible sizing, I think these would be really great pants. Also I should mention that a female friend of mine has an older pair that she's had for years and loves. OR, if you're listening: Please fix the fit of these- make the legs less tight, and make the waist size accurate. Also please make these in a short inseam version. Do that (and maybe make the pockets non-mesh, and add back pockets), and these would be amazing. As it is, I'll probably return them.

Amazing for cold weather adventures

5

I'm 6'1'', 195 lb and ordered a large. The fitting was more of active fit, but the waist is a little loose without the use of a belt. I've used these over a pair of long underwear while hiking in the Adirondacks a couple of times in winter conditions with temps ranging from -10 to 20 degrees F and 40+ MPH winds. They performed well with active movements, blocking the wind and kept me warm and dry all day. The vents are easy to use and worked well to reduce sweating on the climbing sections. I have not tested the waterproof ability in rainy conditions, but I did stay dry in snowy conditions all day long without issues. I have no major concerns overall, but they do require you to take off your boots to put on/remove if you were to carry them as an additional layer in your pack. Otherwise, these will be my go to external layer for winter hiking in temps below 20 degrees.
