RATING AND REVIEWS

Great cold weather midlayer/warm weather emergency piece

5

Great layer above a baselayer for cold weather use. Every ice climbing trip this winter this has been on me, Great for shedding snow on the hike in and then under a couple layers while climbing/belaying. Went for a run with it the other day and was a great on top of a t shirt on a chilly day.

I really wanted to like it ... but

I loved the idea of this jacket so I ordered it. It is very well made, fits great and the body with vertical x insulation is wonderful. However the sleeves were to light and offered no warmth for Utah cold, I put it on and went out it was 30 degrees and about a 20 mph wind, only a t-shirt under, the body was perfect, the sleeves too cold. I put on a 190 merino base layer in place of the t-shirt, body started to get to warm after a walk around the block, the sleeves were better. I do not know what this would work for, very specialized piece. It would make more sense if the sleeves were thicker or had a brushed fleece on the inside of them.

Nice Concept Nice Jacket

Have to say I ordered this jacket just because it looked like a cool concept. Ordered the medium I am 5'10 175 and it fits perfect. Probably could go up to a large if I planned to wear layers underneath. Really like the fit of the jacket and think it will be great for late fall conditions.

An interesting piece, seems pretty specialized

This seems to be a hybrid of the Whirlwind Hoody and the Refuge Jacket. It's sort of a cousin to the Deviator - light arms, sides, and hood with an insulated vest. The softshell material on the arms, sides and hood (from the Whirlwind) is a nice combination of breathable and durable, but fends off light wind and weather (moreso than the Deviator). The arms fit the same as the Whirlwind - nice and long, not too tight but loose enough for base and midlayers underneath. The cuffs seal up nicely. And the thumb loops work, but I haven't found them necessary. The insulated chest area fits a bit bigger than most OR large items (which usually fit me perfectly - 6'1", 180lbs). With just a base layer underneath it's too baggy for me. With a base layer and a midlayer underneath it fits ok (still not as well as other OR large's, but workable). I haven't exercised in it (still considering returning it), so I can't comment on how warm/breathable the insulation is. The hood could use some refinement. It's kind of long and loose and there are no adjustments. So it can get a bit floppy and end up over the eyes. The Whirlwind has a hood adjustment, so it's odd that they left it off this. The combination of the light softshell material with the pretty dense insulation in the vest area (combined with the looser fit) makes the jacket feel a bit odd when moving - you can feel where it moves easily through the sides but then is more rigid through the vest. Maybe with thicker layers beneath it would be more secure and that wouldn't be noticeable. Overall, it's an interesting concept. I guess you would use this on pretty cold, dry days, where the softshell would keep off light weather but you want the extra insulation in the chest. I think I have that use covered already, but this is probably right up someone's alley.
